PSU for OC

HI all! looking to make my rig with the following specs:

CPU: fx6300
CPU cooler: CM hyper 212 evo
mobo:m5a97 r2
memory: corsair vengeance 2x4 1600
gpu: sapphire 7870 xt
case: corsair carbide 300r
optical drive: asus cd/dvd
boot drive: samsung evo 120gb
hdd: 500gb barracuda

i intend to get a 500w PSU. i also intend to overclock the cpu to 4.2-4.5, and the PSU up to 1200ghz. will 500 be enough, or should i go for a 600/650?

Just add the tdp of the processor and gpu plus 200 W for other stuff, add 100w for OC.

yeah, i do admit that i was trying to save as much as i could, and i'm deciding to jump for OCing instead of out of the box power. i'd go for an i5 3570k in the blink of an eye, but the cost difference matters lol.

with regards to the formula, what about the extra wattage my gpu will draw? i read that the 7870 can reach 414w under load. my system overall is going to be around 350w with 4.5ghz on the cpu. but most online calculators dont allow me to factor in GPU overclock.

600w is a safe wattage, but im wondering if i need to go there.

any advise?

what kind of games are u going to play? i5 is much better than fx 6300 in single core performance. I think 400-500w already enough. 600w is plenty of headroom.

world of tanks, diablo, assassin's creed, crysis 3. war thunder, and so on. not the most super intensive ones but still rather demanding.

is it worth the extra cash? i5-3570k. keep in mind the budget build lol

Whatever that is cheapest in the SG market. You can't feel the difference.

And my wallet as well. Guys i recog nise that the 4570k and even the 3570k will outperform 6300. Im trying to keep abudget here. I choose performance that i assume i can forgo in exchange for paltry savings.

That said, by asking about the ram, i was more worried that the high profile ram will be blocked by the hyper 212 or vice versa. I was wondering if anyone with information or experience could advise if it will hinder the build.

Also, i assume 500w will generally be enough to oc with stability? I understand the ampherage matters with psu also, so a corsair 500w should rightfully do the trick yes?

look at my sig...
my system overclocked runs on a 450W 80 plus gold psu.

since u are not CF (given yr Mb) any decent 450-500W will do
if u can wait, a superflower HX500.

if u dare to buy from amazon...
FX 6300 is 110 usd (~144 sgd)
Capstone 450W is 60 usd (~79 sgd)
[need to change the plug to local standard]
Samsung 120 gb EVO is 85 usd (~111 sgd))
the rest you can buy locally... savings not as acute

how much are you getting the fx6300 & m5a97 r2 for? based off mynextcom it's $346
i5 4440 + MSI B85m-G43 is $368 and the price difference is already offset by not buying a cooler

There is also NO SUCH THING as a 4570k. You dont need to oc an intel chip, its much better than amd's trash.

MSI 970A-G46(the cheapest 970 chipset mobo i saw) + fx 6300 = $323
Coolermaster hyper 212x = $65

Oh. Thanks for the input guys. So, what youre saying is that intel will perform much better, and that i dont need to oc it? Not even if i get it from amazon with free shipping? Fx6300 is 109 usd, and hyper 212 evo is 33 usd. Motherboard will be local and should be about....

Hey youre all right. So youre saying if i want a budget build i should just go i5 and a decent mobo, i get more functionaliTy while maintaining cpu performance? Wow i never thought of forgoing the cooler! Will it be detrimental? Not ocing is definately welcome too!

Not unless you have an applications that can fully utilize all 6 cores of the 6300 then the performance will never beat the i5 3470/4570 performance.

Not here to bash either intel or AMD fans.

There are good and there are bad things in AMDs FX CPU.

The good, parallel computing. It is better than intel CPUs.

The bad, it draws a lot of power and is a 32nm based CPU which in turns also output a lot of heat as compared to intel.

It does not benefit much for users such as most of the time idling -> Movies, Music, Internet browsing etc.

The thing is that whatever we do daily right now, we seldom utilize that much cores. Even gaming.

Lastly the pricing locally is just not favorable enough for us.

well now that my theory is completely unfounded, what is a decent cpu for 1080p and mobo that i can get locally? assuming that im forgoing the fan.

also, just to reiterate, im using this with a sapphire 7870 XT, which i read is as good as the 660. pleae correct me if im wrong here as well.

i already own one lol. got it at a good price too. its very comforting to know i got one part right.

so... im completely lost now. do i need a 3570? can i go lower? any big detrimental effects? and a suitable mobo? i dont need anything amazing, just functional. USB 3.0, pcie 3, ATX, decent sound, no need for SLI crossfire.
