Thank you guys.
I will purchase the JR Pass either end of Nov or beginning of next month.
And I shall select the pickup date around 01Dec before my departure on the 18Dec.
Thanks.

You can only buy it when in Japan. Bring your passport along.

Places to get the pass is in the link -

i bought mine from klook. the date is just a SOP date they need you to put in to make sure you will activate in within 3 months.

klook will deliver the voucher to you. but you will need to be IN japan to exchange for the actual JR card. please allocate a few hours of time to queue and exchange for the card. if you're lucky, the queue is short. pass the counter person your letter and the passports for all travellers. i signed on behalf for everyone cos everyone was scattered everywhere LOL while i was queuing. but you have to be the main person who bought the tickets when you exhcnage your letter

reservation can only be done after you get your card. you can ask them to reserve for you. eg. you are leaving in a few days from tokyo to kyoto. see if they can reserve the seats for you. they will point at the calendar and asked you to choose your departing date and time. so make sure you know your timeline for the trip. but let's say you want to reserve for kyoto to come back to tokyo, it will be a no. they will ask you to do it at JR counter in kyoto

I am intending to buy the jr east south hokkaido pass. Any idea what happens if no one is at home when they deliver the passes?

And also if my 6 days itinerary is confirm when i am using the pass, i cant make the seat reservation one shot at chitose airoport while collecting the passes?

Thanks

They deliver the exchange voucher. Delivery will call if nobody at home, just ask them to slot under the main door.

Do it online. You can make online seat reservations even before getting your hands on the passes. You will need to input your cc details but they won't charge you anything unless you didn't collect the seat reservation tickets or collect them at the counter without the passes.

I made at least 4 or 5 different seat reservations online at one go prior to the trip. Had JR East South Hokkaido pass too. I didn't have the pass until I was flying off (booked the pass with Changi Recommends).

you never seen the snaking queue before? and every one infront of you got many questions at the counter?

i gave myself 1 full day time. morning i went it was packed. mid afternoon got very short queue, so i changed my voucher then.

Sweat cream on an ice cream sandwich!

Tourist where got time to sacrifice 1/2 day to change pass

Can't believe Japan of all places got such an ancient unproductive method!

Because almost everyone in the queue has loads of questions to ask at the counter. And due to language barrier, sometimes the tourists had difficulty understanding the CSOs. Sometimes the CSOs had difficulty understanding the tourists.

I went to queue to exchange the orders for the passes, and to collect my online seat reservations on a weekday morning at Ueno station. It was a snaking queue (and I thought I was there early), but I only spent about an hour in the queue (is that considered fast or slow?). I've no questions for them regarding the regional pass, and got my credit card ready for the seat reservations collection as well. So everything went smoothly. If only every one did their homework beforehand though...

It's best that you exchange for the pass one day before you need to use the pass. And buffer lots of time for it. If you have made seat reservations online, you have to collect these seat reservations (with your pass if you book the seats stating that you will have a JR nationwide/regional pass) at least one day before your scheduled ride anyway.

It depends on the station u went to?

Yesterday went to exchange my JR Pass at Sapporo Station. Walk in to JR information center at 10am and it was totally empty. Immediately my turn.

After I got my pass, the lady help me one shot reserve all the tickets I need for 7 days. One time settle everything.

But do help them out by writing on a piece of paper the exact train number you want to take, the date and timing.
