Pure gaming cpu

Amidst all the recent Zen 2 hype, am I crazy to still consider Intel for a pure gaming rig?

I mean I'm seriously looking hard at the 9900k + Z390 Gigabyte Aorus Elite, which is $963 from dynacore price list.

The closest competitor Amd cpu in terms of core count and mhz speed I guess it's their 3800x? And the X570 Gigabyte Aorus Elite isn't available locally. Over at Amazon, these 2 costs over $1k, b4 shipping and gst.

I'm upgrading from the rig on the right-->
As you can see, I don't switch parts very often.

Based on benchmark gaming only intel still the king if you got the money to spend

But if you wan save some money while getting decent performance than ryzen 3600 is a good value gaming cpu

I would sell your gtx 1080 and buy a rtx 2080 or 2070 super and a ryzen 3600 instead especially if u gaming at higher resolution.

You don't need a 9900k for a purely gaming CPU. I wrestled with the same decision when deciding between the 9700k and 9900k. The 9700k is more than enough for gaming at the highest settings with the highest end GPU at any given resolution.

But if you ask me, I'd go for the equivalent Ryzen 3000 series with a good X570 mainboard and get a good GPU instead.

But if Intel is your preference, then I'd personally choose the 9700k. It's easier to clock and runs cooler not to mention cheaper too. I don't exceed 70 degrees at 5.0Ghz across all 8 cores during gaming. 9900k would be a miracle to clock at 5Ghz given many chips aren't that well binned. And if you need a good bin, you need to spend extra on the 9900KS in which case I'd rather channel that kind of money towards the AMD 3800X and above. The Intel price level at 9900k just don't make sense today after the Ryzen 3000 series.

P.S - I feel running the 9900k on the Aorus Elite isn't a very good idea. The elite doesn't have very beefed up VRMs. Go for the Aorus Ultra and above. Nothing below that if 9900k is your choice. If 9700k, the Aorus Elite is okay but if you wanna overclock, then just get the Aorus Ultra altogether.

I considered that too. But I'm hoping to skip the GTX 2000 series and just upgrade my cpu for now.

But i9 9900k with a gtx1080 can only take you so far. If u game at 1440p 144hz, rtx 2080 with a ryzen 3000 will give u a better performance.

I game at 1440p 60hz. So my gtx1080 is adequate for now. I just wanna upgrade my aging cpu and motherboard, lga1366 is like 10years old now?
I understand gaming largely depends on GPU, which is why I've been only upgrading my GPU all these years. (8800GT-->GTX680-->GTX1080)

I am not sure why you will think so. Intel is not immune to the price drop from past AMD chips. While you can buy an Intel chip at say 500 bucks, when you try to sell it, for 400 bucks while a comparatively competitive Ryzen is going for 300 bucks brand new, you will need to adjust your price to sell. For me, getting a Ryzen is a no brainer since the newer Ryzen 3 series is faster overall and yet cost about the same as Intel, while drawing less power.

this is correct, because 1440P and higher resolutions it become more GPU dependant.

2 years ago, I saw the potential of ryzen 1000 and bought it. Now, people are queuing outside stores to buy the ryzen 3000 at release.

It's making a name for itself. Anyway, people that DIY are all after performance and aesthetics.

The hype over Ryzen 3000 is for the cost performance in mainstream market but what you buying isn't mainstream, is one of the highest end.

Yes, I'm sticking to my current GTX1080, right now I'm just thinking about upgrading my cpu.
I'm not just looking at the cpu alone. I'm comparing motherboards too.
Ryzen 3700X + a decent X570 is about $800+
I7 9700K + a decent Z390 board is also $800+

Comparing gaming performance between these 2 intel wins every time.
