Have always heard that you can get desktop system units at cheaper prices and better specs than laptop since it does not compromise size nor come with screen or keyboard. But I see on the market the specs and prices are all pretty similar. is it possible to find a $500 non-DIY desktop with specs of a $800 laptop?

You can't directly compare a desktop vs laptop.

Reason being laptop is a much low powered base than desktop that is powering up using a Power Supply.

Thus the specs inside a laptop usually are low powered kind. And the performance of a laptop is generally weaker than a desktop performance.

$800 laptop base the cheapest should be an i5 with probably a integrated graphics.

On desktop you can't really build a $500 desktop with monitors and keyboard and mouse and OS. Most probably around $600. But just the CPU alone it will be a much more powerful than a laptop.
