Hi Guys,

I am looking at a NAS to replace my current single bay Synology and am quite keen on the TS451+ and the TS453 mini from QNAP...

Anybody has tried them and any real feedback on the differences???

Having HDMI and running Windows is a bit reason I am looking at the QNAP instead of Synology.

Having HDMI and running Windows is a bit reason I am looking at the QNAP instead of Synology.

I have a TS453pro which hass essentially the same CPU as these two your mentioned except the 4 Lan ports and obviously the form factor.

Was keen on the 453mini as it looked quite nice being not typical of the NAS looking thing beside the TV but went for the offer of 453pro with 4G Ram.

Running kodi connected to TV and was able to stream some BPL matches.:s12: Ram usage less than 40%.

I would advise to start off with at least 4Gig or full 8Gig or upgrade yourself easily these two NAS to 16Gig if you plan to run VM on this. Maybe future would do so but the Ram usuage doesn't justify putting money in it.

These NAS basically functions as a HTPC via the HDMI connected cable. I used a Logitech wireless Keyboard to connect to it.

You may want to look at TS453A if you are looking to output 4K or transcode 4K movies. Future proof maybe with the N3150 chip? ;)

Cheers.

The first thing you should consider is which Software you would like to use. DSM or QTS cause both software offers different features. I'm a TS453Pro user and maybe regretted a bit buying it cause I did not read the forums that the software has a few major problems. So maybe I suggest you should read both side of the forums and from there, weigh the pros and cons.

what is the major problem you've faced?

And another thing is that they never fufil one of their promises. Example would be the Hybrid Backup Restore. It was supposed to be release in 2015 Q4 but they never and instead, they release it during January but with a lot of bugs. So they pull the app and currently, no words on its ETA. Their management a bit cock up but definitely, has a lot of room for improvement. If they decide to step their game, then I think they will be comparable to Synology DSM.

Thanks... That's exactly what I plan to use the NAS for.... As a media server connected to the TV, and running VM...

I would go for 8Gb RAM; not sure whether 16Gb will be useful, since I'll be running 1 VM mainly....

The TS453A I believe is out of budget... I will need to check the prices on these to really make a decision....

I am very familiar with the Synology DSM.... I did have a similar issue before on Synology Cloud Station 2 years ago; where it will not be syncing my files right; sometimes deleting them.... Since then, I stopped using Cloud Station but the service was still running....
Few days ago, I've been having 100% CPU utilisation and found the issue to be linked to Cloud Station. After I disabled it, the CPU utilisation went normal.

Not sure how worst QNAP is relatively. But I did hear that the QTS is not as good as DSM...

Any more feedback??? I could also go for a Synology 4 bay, and get a SFF to connect to my TV, which is kind of troublesome.

Qnap hardware specs are good while Synology Software are good. Before you decide, you should look at Qnap's websites and manual. See how the present their products. To me, a lot of work needs to be done. Some of the features pages are outdated.
