Query - 1440p on a late 2012 Mac Mini

Hi all - I just purchased a BenQ XL2730Z which has the following inputs

DisplayPort x1 • DVI x1 • HDMI (v1.4) x1 • HDMI (v2.0) x1 • VGA x1

The DP hooks up to my gaming PC

For my Late 2012 Mac Mini, I've hooked it up directly via one of the HDMI ports - but for some reason, I cannot get my Mac Mini (via sys preferences > display) to scale up to 1440p

Googled around, seems like the limitation is the HDMI out; hence my following query

Is the thunderbolt port on the mini, also a mini-displayport ?

If so, does this mean I will need something like the below ?

Yup it should be a mini displayport out. You can get a mini displayport to displayport as well.

thanks mate; unfortunately my benq display has only 1 DP and it's reserved for my gaming pc so mini dp to hdmi is my next fall-back

any idea where is a good place to get a mini dp to hdmi cable ? the belkin listed on apple sg is a tad pricey - saw a couple 'generic' ones on lazada and qoo10 but not sure if they are able to correctly drive 1440p ?

ok so i ordered the belkin mini-DP to HDMI cable, plug it into my XL2730Z and viola! still only 1080P option

Anybody has successfully driven this before? I know the cleanest route is mini-DP to DP but my display only has 1 DP and it's reserved for the gaming rig

Googled around - found this software SwitchRes X, only managed to blacked out my entire screen ! managed to restore it by hooking it up to another display

Any guidance/advice would be much appreciated - thanks in advance

Edit: Fiddled around further, 35 hz for 2560 x 1440 via the switch resX works.. this is quite annoying, why wouldn't 1440p be supported via HDMI 1.4/2.0 , is this some sort of OS X limitation ?

Your cable is definitely not HDMI 2.0.

You might need an active adapter. Google dp to hdmi 2.0

Searching around that belkin cable results in mixed reviews. Apparently can drive up to 4K@30Hz. Might be your Mac mini not detecting properly or something of that sort.

Maybe you can ask the sales people or something to test before you make your purchase. Or if you're buying online, yeah look for one that have past users saying that it works.

i think what u said re the active adapter might be the answer; the belkin looks more and more like a passive one as i googled around

damn, should have gotten the asus 1440p display with two DP instead , haha

Go for the DP to DVI adapter. I've a Dell 2713HM and it won't do > 1080 on HDMI. DVI and DP both do 1440 no issues, so if the DP is already in use, get a miniDP to DVI adapter.

googled ard further, looks like the mini DP to dual link dvi might just be the solution but it's a whopping $138 !

really regret not hooting the asus display now, tried to save
$100+ but looks like thats going into the dual link dvi cable , haha

just thought of sharing - finally found a apple mini DP to DVI adapter for under 80 over at carousell (really didn't feel like splashing the 100+ for it)

anyways bingo - 1440p now works like a charm.. Still puzzling though why 1440p doesn't work with HDMI
