I have read some Tokyo Trip guide book recommending a overnight stay at Hakone to enjoy the scenery at a leisure pace.

However, can anybody whom been there can advise whether is it overkill to stay, say : 3days2nights for a 6 days Tokyo Free and Easy tour?

For a slow pace relaxing trip, 2d2n would be great

Have brunch at shinjuku
Reach hakone around late noon
Check into ryoken n wait for dinner to be served
After dinner, enjoy onsen or any in house facility
Early night
Early breakfast
Go on hakone course with the freepass - tram, ropeway, shrine, treks n boat ride
Back to ryoken by evening for dinner n relax thru the night

That is also roughly my plan
Sidetrack a bit, if based on your plan, on the 3rd day, is it worthwhile to go to Kamakura (since it is along the way) for a day tour(morning to noon), and return back to Tokyo/Shinjuku in the evening?

Depends on your interest, for me, i rather drop by odawara where i can go view the castle instead

i find that temples/shrines are aplenty in japan

Unless the travel period coincide with any of the festivals in Kamakura, then i'll probably pick kamakura over odawara

Ok. Thanks.

I planned to cover the Odawara castle trip inside the 3 days.Hopefully have more than enough time

Actually, its the Great Buddha statue that interest me to go Kamakura

I would think that 3D2N is bordering on overkill.

Most folks do either a daytrip or 2D1N at most. I've done both and felt that 2D1N is just about right. The only reason I can think of for staying 3D2N is if you are booking a very nice ryokan and wanna spend more time soaking in the onsen with a view of Mt Fuji.

Don't forget that there isn't much activity after 5pm and many of the buses and transportation modes (cruise, etc...) stop at around 5pm. The mad rush home for daytrippers who are driving also means that you will spend lots of time in traffic if you are taking the remaining bus services to get around in the evening.

Oh and don't forget to buy the freepass.
