Question about laggy PC and upgrading

I'm currently using an old desktop at home, about 5 years old. For simple net surfing and documents processing and emails.

Served me well til recently began lagging very badly, every click takes forever to process, even after i did a full reformatting and reinstallation of windows, it helped but still laggy.

The processor is a i5, gigabyte motherboard, and i'm using windows 7.

Just a general question, will it help if i do an upgrade of the motherboard? I dont need high specs, just enough so that its smooth when web surfing.

Thinking of this because reluctant to splash out 700-1000 for a new desktop that sits around doing nothing much the whole day.

Don't think changing of MB will help. Try getting a new SSD as boot drive and up your RAM at 4gb, if you are those that open tons of tabs, 8gb.

1) Get some 2nd-hand DDR3 RAM

2) Swap to a SSD boot drive. Brand-new because this one can be reused should u move on to a new rig

- mainboard H61M-USB3-B3 REV 2.0
- i5 Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz, 3301 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
- 1TB HDD hitachi hds721010cla332
- Win 7

Could it be just a change to SSD? I'd so go out immediately to get one now. If I load the OS on the SSD, and the rest of the info on this existing hdd, will i still run into issues like this? or will it just be slow loading docs on this hdd? Can i still continue using this hdd?

Yup fresh install os on the ssd n use ur current HDD as secondary drive. Upgrade ram if it's 4gb to at least 8gb.

Thanks! I'd think Sim Lim is closed now. Either challenger or Mustafa should be able to get? Any particular model of ssd I should get?

I haven't really done my own setup before but I think I can figure out how to to install the hdd in. Just need to know what to buy.

Don't need a large ssd then, just a reasonable one for the os will do!

highly possible your hdd spoiling. download hgst hdd health check to see if it's really the case. buying a 180gb ssd to purely install windows and essential software wouldn't harm as well.

Guys I just ran a hdd test with the advise given above.

Ran it with Crystaldiskinfo, and subsequently with HDDScan

Both showed me "Caution" on Reallocated Sector Counts, with the raw count on crystaldiskinfo at 16.

The rest of the tests shows ok.

Does the above warrant a change in the hdd?

Not so concerned about losing the data, not much locally, most are in the cloud. In fact i just reformatted it so its basically empty.

More concern about the speed of it. Whenever open a new program will just lag for a few seconds. or very choppy web surfing.

The HDD is failing. If you don't need the data on the old hdd. Just put it aside. Don't connect it to the pc anymore. Get a 240/250gb ssd like what others said. Re-Install the os on the ssd.

Ok thanks! I'll get a ssd. I'll need to buy an enclosure also is it? Does my current hdd have an enclosure that I can reuse?

Got the ssd and installed it! Wow the speed difference is noticeable right away. From installations to opening programs.

Thanks everyone for your advice! Never thought its the hdd causing the problem, always thought its the processor issue!

By the way I left the ssd in the casing not secured. Hopefully that doesn't cause any issue
