Bottleneck at your USB?
i am thinkng if PCIe 3.0 will be already overkill for the usb enclourse. gotten a ugreen enclourse, thinking to buy a nvme hdd for it but not sure which to get.

I will just go with the cheapest and largest capacity NVMe from reputable brands like Crucial, Kioxia, WD (SanDisk), and Samsung.

But that is just me. Some might not agree.

  1. USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps): Most USB NVMe enclosures use USB 3.2 Gen 2, which provides a maximum theoretical speed of 10 Gbps (roughly 1,250 MB/s). This speed limit is significantly lower than the maximum bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 (8,000 MB/s) and PCIe 3.0 (4,000 MB/s). So even if you use a PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD, the actual speed is capped by the USB connection, not the SSD's PCIe generation.
  2. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps): Some newer enclosures support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, which can reach up to 20 Gbps (roughly 2,500 MB/s). This can improve performance but is still well below the potential of PCIe 4.0.
  3. Impact of PCIe 3.0 vs PCIe 4.0 in USB Enclosure:
    • PCIe 3.0 NVMe: In a USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Gen 2x2 enclosure, a PCIe 3.0 SSD will likely perform closer to the USB bandwidth limit.
    • PCIe 4.0 NVMe: A PCIe 4.0 SSD will also be bottlenecked by the USB interface, and you will not see the full speed benefit of PCIe 4.0 unless the enclosure and host support a much higher-speed interface, such as Thunderbolt.

the only nvme enclosure that can fully saturate Gen 4 drives is with a Intel JHL9480 chipset (TB5)

most enclosures cap out at around 3GB/s

for best value and stability, any brand with Realtek RTL 9210B chipset
I've tried many and have used ASM and JM, and I agree. RTL9210B remains my most stable chipset.

Prices have been going up quite a bit tho. At one point of time, they could be had for $10-15 per enclosure.

In this case, if let say i am looking a simple 10gbps enclosure, is there any differences between a JMS583 and 9210 chipset in the case for UGreen?
As there seems to be a huge cost differences between those 2 for UGreen

And are there any differences from cheaper 9210 enclosure from the likes of JEYI, like this compared to UGreen?

JMS583 has issues at idle

Not much difference really. Only difference comes down to cooling

@TS, if you got time you can see if Popular got lobang for cheap external SSD.
Will be definetely cheaper than getting a SSD + closure.
I got a Samsung 500GB SSD under $100 last year.

Someone gave me a ugreen enclosure, since I already have the case that why I wonder which typeof internal nvme to buy

In a similar situtation as you though i am looking for a enclosure for my spare transcend mte220s SSD which right now is in the comp as extra drive but just pushing back on spending more money right now as my old samsung t5 is still functioning

Like others mentioned, i also belive the bottle neck is at the devices you wish to plug in to since not all support the higher 20 or 40 gbps. Gen4 is really overkill and it runs hot. Depending on your enclosure rated speed, wouldn't suggest it so PCIE Gen 3 should be sufficient. But if there was a gen 4 drive with decent price, not a bad idea for it either.

I think the better question is that what you intend to do with it?
As it would then depends on the SSD that you buy
- does it has DRAM?
- TLC or QLC?

If it were you and that data that i will be storing on the SSD isn't mission critical or a backup, then probably i would get the more cost effective SSD be it known brands or the china ones :giggle:
Maybe something like the
- Crucial E100
- Crucial P3 Plus
- LEXAR NQ700
- Fanxiang S880
