Question about RAM

Hi guys, I'm currently using msi z170a gaming 5 mobo and they have this function called, memory try it.

I'm not very well versed but apparently it works something similar to xmp. I'm using corsair lpx 2400mhz ram and I'm wondering, will it have any difference if I were to set it to 3000mhz since there is a given option.

Or will it decreases my performance since the advertised ram speed is only at 2400 with xmp enabled.

That's for OCing memory. Generally, I find such functions useless as manual OC is more precise.

By all means try 3000, if it doesn't work you can always go back to 2400 or 2666.

If it works, you can increase performance slightly. If it doesn't work, your rig will either fail to boot or become unstable during use.

You should download and run Memtest86 to test for stability.

Well you can give it a try. Depending on the quality of RAM the OC may be stable.
But unless you are bench-marking to get that score on the hwbot. RAM speed real world benefits are so hard to distinguish that I don't think its worth it.

I used to OC ram a lot before tinkering with different speeds and timings to get stable OC. But after a lot of headaches I stopped bothering with it as performance benefits are so minuscule.

It's generally for specific memory chipset.
ie, Hynix that do high freq but loose RAS-CAS timings.
If you are unsure about the stuff, most likely you need to clear cmos a few times if it doesn't boot.
For your info.
If your kits are not high freq rated, most likely you won't get much headroom.
And stable is an issue even if you do.
But of cos, you can try for your own experience.
(It won't kill the hardware)

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm currently trying out memory try it with my 2400 ram using the Samsung preset, not entirely sure what it does but my system can still take my gaming sessions. So I assume everything is okay as of now?
