Question about uni courses

Hi guys! Question about uni courses. Firstly, I do not mean to brag or show off my situation as I’m currently in my second year of army and i was rejected by all the local unis in my first year of army.
However, this year I’m fortunate enough to be offered a placing for SUSS full-time accountancy programme which I am very thankful for. I accepted the SUSS offer. I also applied for Economics in NTU and SMU, but was rejected without even an interview. Now the question is should i appeal for NTU/SMU to try to get a place in the more well-known uni or just stay in SUSS? A minor plus point of SMU would be its nearer for me but its just a minor concern for me. Again, I have no intentions of bragging, its just a genuine question on what should I do as I am rather lost now especially with SUSS being a less well-known uni so I’m a little afraid on my future career prospects. Any help will be very much appreciated!

It doesn't hurt to apply again since you're still in NS haha. Econs and accountancy are quite different btw, gotta first decide which you enjoy or have an interest in. In any case, a local uni degree is still better than doing a distance learning degree at private IHLs. If you're comfortable with studying accountancy then SUSS would be the best choice for you since the cutoff is much higher in NUS/NTU/SMU. Are you from JC or poly?

Anyhow, I would think that an accountancy degree would be more employable than economics regardless of where you graduate. And for accounts, a bachelors is just the first stepping stone; subsequent accreditions are much more important for accountants.

I actually did quite badly for my 'A's. I took PCME(h1 econs) combi, got D,C,C,A, with B for both GP and PW.

Tbh, I'm quite lost now actually, but the main thing is I prefer to study non-science courses and despite my poor math grades in the 'A' levels, I feel that I'm kind of a numbers person, in fact i scored pretty well in my school's prelims for math, was very shocking that I got a C for it when the results came out actually.

The brand of the big 3 is definitely more prestigious. However if you are just comparing the course(accountancy) itself, suss accountancy(direct entry to the Singapore CA Qualification) is recognised by the ACRA & SAC just like the big 3.

There is calculation involved and yes you deal with numbers to an extend, but you may wish to gain a deeper understanding of this field both as a career and as a course of study.

Haha accountancy is more than numbers it is a whole new world with lots of weird jargon that you have to learn and get used to. Alot of nitty gritty things. You need to be meticulous and a perfectionist. And I agree that an accounting degree will be more highly prized than an economics degree since the former is more technical and rigorous. Don't worry about NUS and NTU. After all, everyone has to go through the same CA route.

I guess the misconceptions comes from the fact that there is only very brief information online, it seems to me that one can only truly get the big picture after they have gone through the course themselves.

Accounting only requires very very very basic math. Like how to add, subtract, times and divide.

The foundation of accounting is your standard double entries, and T-accounts. Then when you dig a bit deeper, there's also the financial reporting (think: more advanced double entries but you're dealing with more complicated stuff like forex) and also management accounting - variance analysis, budgeting, etc. The upper modules of accounting deals with auditing, corporate governance and also business and tax law.

You need to be clear of what accountancy entails. If you don't find all these remotely interesting, it's going to be a very dry and painfully boring experience in uni.

Starting out after graduation SUSS will definitely have a harder time because you have to compete with NUS, NTU, SMU. But after you land yourself a job, things should even out.

For economics it is not entirely qualitative; mathematics and statistics like calculus, probability theory, regression models, play an important part of economics.
