Hi guys, thinking of upgrading my pc as I think the processor is causing a bottlekneck in games like bf4 and dragon age inquisition. Can only manage 40-50fps at med-high setting.

Current specs:
AMD athlon ii x4 620
Asus M4a77td
Crucial 8gb ram 1600mhz
Sapphire r9 280
Plextor m5s 128gb

Would i3 or i5 make a big difference if I intend to game at high/ultra? And would ultra even be possible? I'm using a 1600x900 res.

Not sure which motherboard to get too, hope for suggestions! Thanks!

yes it will, your cpu is major bottleneck. Esp at the lower res.

Get a i5 4460 and a asrock h81-dgs. If you are on a tighter budget can consider i3 as well, still will be an improvement over your current cpu.

Your gfx can handle bf4 ultra with no AA or FXAA

I've heard that the bf4 multiplayer is quite CPU intebsive. Would an i3 be sufficient to run it at high settings at least?

Should be fine altho if you google benchmarks you will see a slightly poorer min fps for bf4 on the i3. But if otherwise on high no problem. If you can tho go for the i5 and no need worry about proc for a few years

Alright I guess I will get an i5 just for a bit of future proofing. Are there any major differences between the h81,b85 and h87 motherboards? I saw many people recommending the h81.while the other 2 cost just 20-30 dollars more.

The only difference is the extra features that each mobo has and the price but ask yourself, do you need this extra features?

If you buy a motherboard with all the fanciful features but didn't use it at all, might as well buy a cheaper motherboard with enough features for your need.

In a nutshell is that h87 and b85 has more sata ports (6) vs the 4 on h81.
It also has more usb 3 ports h97(6) and h81(2). They all have lots of usb 2.0 ports.

Most people use only 3 sata ports ( DVD, SSD, and HDD)

Beyond this there isnt much diff be it quality or performance.
