Hi, just wondering, interior designer and space planners which offer renovation works for both residential and commercial projects is it use CAD software to do their work? If it is, is CAD software more GPU intensive or CPU intensive? Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Check with the school what software they use

Check software website what gpu it supports. most of them normal gpu also can dont need workstation graphics

School ask us find our own software :/

Thanks anyways. So for interior design just the integrated graphics is enough right?

Since you are student so I can advice:
Autocad got free software for students to download and use.

http://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/autocad

However please take note you need a workstation not a regular
desktop to run.
The most basic workstation under Edu price below $2k
is either Dell 3000 series or HP Z240.

Specs wise the most basic is either Xeon E3 series with
Entry level Quadro or Firepro professional graphic.
Why need professional graphic?

CAD needs OPENGL acceleration which is only on professional graphic.
Radeon, Geforce are more towards 3D acceleartion for games and etc.
Opengl can run but it isn't as smooth as a professional grade graphic.

Integrated graphic is more for basic use only.
Not recommended for CAD/Design software but again depend
on what software.

However for CAD software with OPENGL than integrated cannot run
especially Intel HD graphics. Tried before so I know, it will keep
prompt error message "incompatible graphic device."

Actually by right you should ask the school about this.
Which school is this that they ask you own-self source?
Are you IT intern izzit? :s13:

School computer lab got workstation, can just ask whether
can use or not. Cannot be you come out your own money
just to buy a workstation which serve only one purpose which is your
course work only cannot play game.

Do also take note that the Autocad free software, when you
download means your own copy. Don't go around distribute
to the class or share it's against the EULA which can be caught.

If your classmate want, they must create their own account and download. Cannot share the same CD-key with you.

Your school sucks.

Legit design schools will provide CAD software deployments or at the very least student versions whenever their courses require it.

My coy uses autocad to design our solar/wind farms. I know original is very expensive. Maybe you can find friendly versions.

Autocad Coy and Edu pricing are very huge.
In the past I do outsource for both prices before so I know.
Autocad is also very strict with it's licensing, if you
accidentally exceed the number of seats you brought
they will bill you or worse send you a fine letter.
Tio before I know.

Go and decide on what CAD software you want to use first, then see what it requires.

For eg, for video editing, it can be done in both Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X. For Premiere a PC based machine might be better, but FCPX would perform much better on a Mac because it's already optimised.

See my analogy even though both are video editing software?

I think the point of the project is for you to find out right? One easy way is you go and look at the job ads by interior design/architecture firms. You see the software skills they list there, then you will know what software they use...

This is coursework for what course? You are in IT or ID?

Because it depends on your expected usage, more 2D or more 3D.

For AutoCAD, the key thing to know when it comes to video cards is that 3D models are the only thing that uses the GPU for anything more than simply displaying what is on the screen. If you will only be working with 2D models or rendering then you are better off saving money on the GPU and putting that money towards a faster CPU, SSD, or more RAM.

It really depends on what you use AutoCAD for. For 2D performance GPU doesn't really matter but for 3D performance the GPU matters.
Also keep in mind that ACAD prefers faster cores over more cores and hyperthreading isn't worth it.

hello.

6 years ago i was working in simlim square building DIY PCs.

I remember once we were asked to build a system for somewhat intensive 3D design using AutoCAD or some software.

The client wanted (or we decided can't rmb) the intel core 2 extreme series processors and used nvidia quadro fx4800.

OxrKOAA.jpg

*pic was during initial testing/troubleshooting, thus only one ram

Quite decent at that time, not for gaming though.

I rmb the gpu cost about $2k at that time. Cpu also not cheap cos is the extreme series which comes with Intel's "bigger" cooler

May be u can take a look at these series of gpu, fx series if i rmb correct is certified by AutoCAD, but double check to make sure....the cpu n ram will be about the same.
