Currently using amd ryzen5 3600 and 5600xt, considering upgrade to the recent release of amd 8700g

Seems like most reviews comparing it to a Nvidia 1650 and if I remember vaguely 5600xt wasn't much faster than 1650

So is this a good idea to upgrade?

Considering the new white mb x670e aorus pro

quite a big downgrade. 5600xt is comparable to 2060, and both of those cards are about double the performance of a 1650, so not sure where u saw that the 5600xt is only slightly faster :s22:

8700G is using 780M igpu. For a APU, this is a awesome combo which allow you to game in 1080P and still have AMD AI support.

If you are not in a hurry, AMD new cpu and mobo coming out 2nd half of this year. You can wait and see.

Look for benchmarks of r780m, that's the built in gpu for 8700g

Or just upgrade cpu to 7600 or 7700 and continue using 5600xt
Don't game much these days, mostly running vm or android games

The APUs have one advantage (to be confirmed after reviews are out), in that they are monolithic dies and have much lower idle wattages vs the Zen4 desktop CPUs.

If you don't game except once in a blue moon (as opposed to just infrequently), then you can run with just the 8700G and only plug in the 5600xt if needed.

Those APUs are good for running high-performance servers, they have good cores. :cool:

For performance sever/workstation, It is advisable to use sever grade cpu/motherboard/gpu.
There are some example below, some softwares are made to run well on server grade components. don't save to pay expensive hidden price.

LMAO, that MB from Intel 4th-gen Haswell you linked is probably sitting in some of the trash bins as we speak. Why pay for something that can be found in the bin o_O?

Besides, using an extremely outdated Xeon processor with a ton of threads doesn't improve the performance of server applications that don't use more than four threads. If a server application runs ONLY up to four threads, you'll never get as good performance from a four-thread CPU from 'server-grade' components compared to a mainstream CPU.


If you think a 'server-grade' CPU based on Intel 4th-gen Haswell will perform better than a server based on a Ryzen 8000 APU, I think it's time to wake up. Times have changed, and people shouldn't hold onto their beliefs; they should start seeing things logically.

The trend of selling dedicated servers with mainstream CPUs is increasing rapidly simply due to the demand. You can see the prices for yourself. In fact, the only reason to go for dated 'server-grade' components is that if you are ABSOLUTELY broke.

Server-grade components MAY come with very specific features. However, there is always a way to work around and configure them to achieve the same result.

In reality, many people do see the pros of using these Ryzen APUs to run servers because of their power efficiency and strong individual core performance, which makes them extremely versatile for different types of server applications, whether they are massively or lightly multithreaded.

Next, if you want something close to these modern architecture CPUs that are also a 'server-grade' component, you would look at EPYC 4th Gen processors, which are about 4x the cost or even higher.

If for server I might go with 8700g and pass thru for fun...but I just gotten a xeon d1581 from taobao recently.....so far so good.....guess I will stick with it for awhile

I have to admit it's an itchi backside upgrade but don't want to spend too much on overkill

I experienced it first hand.

My Xeon e5-2690v4 with 14 cores lost to my 6 core Intel i5-12400.

I was running computation programs from the commandline, opening multiple windows and each commandline window running 1 program.

The throughput from the i5-12400 was better and consumed less power too.

The Xeon setup was relatively cheap to setup, but after experiencing both, I would pay more to get a more modern CPU for the more muscular IPC as it saves time and energy costs.

I think it depend on usage ba, some people might had quit gaming and need pc for light indie gaming, watching youtube/TikTok and use ms office for their word. E3/5 might be a greater value to them

I suspect, for basic use like above, many v old 4 core / 8 thread CPUs can do the job.
I have used a e5-1620v4 and i7-4770 for basic use without issues.

If I understand it, the E5 are very similar to the same generation i7s, just no integrated graphics and with more cache.
My computation programs ran in roughly similar time on a i7-4770 and e5-1620v4 (3 yrs newer) to my dismay.

actually it depend on the framework of how your computation programs work. E5 have much more core than a general 4th gen processor and it work faster if all core are running together but if your program is not programmed to use mutiple core or all core from E5, it will likely perform the same as a i7-4770 if they are just using same number of core.

Yeah, so how is e3/5 greater value for those task you mentioned on previous post it doesn't make sense since they are very lightly multithreaded :spin:

if you expect the computer to compute a job fast for you, how does that sound as light usage? if you in a hurry, you expect bus to reach the place fast for you?

i did not say buying old part will definately be a great value

in my previious post, i mentioned that it depend on situation and that user useage, if you had some old part like ddr3 ram, old motherboard, sata ssd and your usage is not heavy , buying those server CPU to make a computer can also be a option.

The scenario you stated don't even make sense. If a person quit gaming, why would they have to build another computer for basic use? huh?!

Even if you had old server parts lying around, which you only mention now, it doesn't really justify to ditch a rig and rebuild a stone age server rig which is way slower.

Hey if you love your xeons, you do what you do.. but let's be real here

first thing first, i did't suggest people to ditch anything or build any stone age server in any of my post. i think you misunderstand what i mean.

i am just saying it might be value for some people who had old part and wanted to repurpose them and xeon might be vaule option to them that why they have buy them.
