I think it depend on usage ba, some people might had quit gaming and need pc for light indie gaming, watching youtube/TikTok and use ms office for their word. E3/5 might be a greater value to them

I mean I can't I understand why a person who quit gaming will then need another computer and rebuild a xeon computer to use Youtube/TikTok/Office?

Who on earth will do that instead of using their existing rig?

Thanks for sharing your experience.

To take things up a notch, you can develop your own personal applications with special use cases, configure your home lab, and set up a hybrid cloud+premise infrastructure for your application. I feel that it's more fulfilling because a lot more goes into it.

Most people are running just as a hobby, so the sense of purpose for such a setup isn't that strong with stuff that already exists everywhere. This is just my humble opinion.

Overall, such use cases make getting a second machine more justified.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that if a person quits gaming, they can still use their rig for web browsing, there is no need to build another rig.

It's my hobby too....running unRAID and proxmox on 2 machine....
Running apps like nifi, pfsense, home assistant, windows vm, Linux vm and sometimes testing some interesting dockers or low/no code app testing
Been trying to figure out how to configure things like lidarr and radarr...if anyone has any group to share, please let me know

Agree, as a hobby and for experimentation, if u need many cores for VMs, cheap RAM, want to do RAID etc, u may be able to snag 2nd hand Xeons, ECC Ram, workstations for cheap.

Its amazing when u can get enterprise class CPUs previously used in datacentres 7 yrs ago for like 5% or less of its original list price.

For me, once it went beyond tinkering and required days of runtime, I bit the bullet and replaced the Xeons with modern CPUs that run faster and require less energy.

I bought a D1581 last oct, its 8yr old architecture but i checked performance around 10th gen i5 but with more core/thread/cache and Its quite cheap about $300 for mb/cpu with 4x 2.5gbps intel

So far it serve what i need and power consumption is reasonable i guess

The network requirement of 4x 2.5g bps is a good use case for old but cheap enterprise hardware.
Got to admit, very good power consumption at 65W.
