Question on iphone vs DSLr

Hi all

Been out of the photog scene for a while so maybe you guys can help me out with a question.

I've got an upcoming trip to Yosemite National park and want to do some landscape photography. I'm torn between brining my 12MP Nikon D90 with 18-105VR lens, or to just stick with my iPhone 6s camera.

Both same resolution, though the D90 has a larger sensor and RAW but I don't intend to do much post processing anyway (haven't kept my editing software current etc.). Iphone is lighter also considering that I'll be on a 2 week trip, plus easier to charge with a powerbank.

Thinking of a reason why I should bring my D90 as opposed to just sticking with my iPhone 6s, other than the fact I maybe want to get some use out of it as its been sitting in the dry cabinet for years unused, and if the image quality of the two are significant enough to warrant lugging the camera around

Get tokina 11-16 mm for landscape photography and a macro lense for close up shots like flowers , insects etc . Use iphone as a backup

As you've mentioned the D90's advantage lies in Raw and a larger sensor (better high ISO performance). In addition to that, it has easily accessible manual controls for Aperture, SS and ISO. The iphone is stuck at a wide angle field of view while the D90 with the 18-105mm goes from wide angle to medium telephoto. If you are going with friends or family, they could want some pictures taken of them at various points of attractions, this is where the zoom could help with composition.

If you don't intend to post process or use the control dials on your D90, the iphone is clearly a better camera which you'll already have on hand at all times.

If you aren't printing then it doesn't matter, the iPhone would have significantly better mobility vs resolution of the DSLR.

If you are talking dynamic range & colors, of course, you know after PP, the D90 will yield far better results than iPhone.

iPhone images tend to get noisier after PP.

If your wife and kid is going alone, a DSLR might take you better memories but the iPhone would give you versatility.

Depends on whether own time own target or with family

If you are going on a trip, mainly yourself and have nothing else to manage except taking photographs, D90 AND iphone

If you have a family to manage, you will somehow find that time to whip out the D90 from the camera bag, will be a luxury, much less change lenses on the go. Then there is stowing the camera back into where it came out.... A bao ga liao superzoom would be the better choice in this scenario.
