Bought a new hdd (wd black 2tb), going to use it as a data drive, do I need to do any kind of testing before using the drive?

Because I currently have a portable hdd as my data drive but I want to free it so I can use my portable hdd for other uses, so would like to transfer the data from the portable hdd to the wd black, also don't have any backup so scared if transfer and wd black got any problem then all data gone...

Your worry is real, always make backup in another drive or media. You should have a copy of important data in your external HDD and your WD Black too.

You can use HDTune to scan for bad sectors. Do not check Quick scan.

I use WD Data LifeGuard to run an extended SMART test on all new drives. Just leave it overnight.

It'll be a smart option to back everything up over cloud so you can always sign in to your cloud account google, microsoft, whatever and at least recover the most crucial bits of data. it is also smart to have backup of the most important piece of data over a pc that is always offline because if you've followed this WannaCry ransomware thing closely, our data can poof into thin air virtually anytime.
