Hello seniors, peers of NUS.

I would like to find out whether it is hard to apply for overseas student exchange to the United States?

Which year would be the best year to apply for this? - Current in my Year 2 Sem 1.

What is the selection process by the panel/community? - Do CGPA plays as the upmost important factor for the selection process?

Also, any seniors had been to U.S for exchange before? What would be the roughly estimated expenses? Is there any loan I am able to take to supplement this part?

It is difficult to get exchange programme especially if you dont have FCH CAP. Year 2 sem 1 is your best time to apply because in y2s2 you can only apply for y3s2 and in y3s1 you will not be allowed to apply anymore.

Yes, cgpa will determine if you can get an interview so it will be most important in this sense. Then the rest will depend on your interview. Not sure what they are looking for though.

Estimated expenses is SGD$12k, for 1 semester.

Hi, if I'm not mistaken, you should have matriculated to NUS Business and so my 2 cents will be based on that assumption:

- Exchange places to the US are always competitive but variable in absolute difficulty as its dependent on demand (e.g 5x oversubscribed vs 2x oversubscribed at another location). However, it is possible to make educated projections and "sample the student population" to figure out how competitive each location is.

- Costs can really vary by locality, amount of travel, cost of living, accommodation, and how long you wish to spend in country before and after the semester. You should also apply for bursaries as needed.

Feel free to PM me for more info on the financials or process of securing a place for exchange, always happy to help!

Cheers

just to add onto what the rest have said, it also depends on your faculty, the competition at various faculties differs.

Not sure which faculty you are from but for NUS Biz school here it goes.

United States is definitely competitive as it is popular! But you can also check out diff schools with the States. There are some schools that are way more popular due to the amount of modules that you can clear. With careful planning, you can choose a less competitive school while clearing the right modules

In terms of selection process, it differs by faculty as well.

Some based it purely on CAP ( results), while others take into account other factor etc interview selection or extra-curriculum activities.
