Questions on Post-Secondary Education

Hi. I'm a Secondary 3 student this year and I have some questions on post-secondary education and I'll be grateful if someone can help me out.

To start off, my subject combination is:

1. English Language
2. Mother Tongue (Chinese)
3. Elementary Mathematics
4. Combined Science (Chemistry+Physics)
5. Combined Humanities (Social Studies+Geography)
6. Principle of Accounts
7. Pure Literature (in English)

I intend to go to SP'S Creative Writing for Television and New Media and eventually become a journalist in the future. Is this the right course for me? Should I consider going to a JC (Arts Stream)?

The second course that I am considering is SP's Information Security Management. However, when I looked through the course structure, I saw that there are mathematics modules. As can be seen from my subject combination, I do not take Additional Mathematics. Will I be struggling in this course since I did not take Additional Mathematics, or will be a foundation in Elementary Mathematics be sufficient?

Lastly, I would like to ask about CCAs in polytechnics. Currently, I am in a performing arts CCA. If I would like to join a different performing arts CCA in poly, would prior knowledge in that performing art be required, or will people with no experience or whatsoever be allowed to join?

I was definitely in your shoes, but the good thing is, you already know what you want to do, and that's very important! It took me a while, but I finally realised what it is I wanted to pursue after I took my A levels. I wished I had someone to guide me but hey thing's are alright still.

I came from a JC (arts stream) and then went on to get my degree in communications majoring in Public Relations and Journalism from the University of Newcastle at a private institution. The only reason I went to JC was because my parents "told me so" because they thought it was the quickest route to Uni. Back then I didn't know what I wanted so I just went with it. In the end, I didn't enjoy what I was doing (that's not to say JC isn't good though) so JC was a bad experience.

The thing is, if you really know what you want, I personally feel that you should just work towards that goal. Read all you can about being a journalist and basically just immerse yourself in that field so you know what to expect. From there you'll start figuring it out.

And whether to go JC or Poly, you just have to weigh it out. Personally I feel that if I were you, and since you already know what you want to pursue, I would go to poly because the course would prepare you for pursuing your interest. On the flipside, if you go to JC, you just have to make sure you study hard and get your grades to enter the local U and find the relevant degree that you want. I feel that if you're not aiming to enter the local U, there's really no point in going JC.

Either way, if your grades don't work out, it's not the end. The private institutions are definitely a viable path to take as well and they offer a range of courses.
