- car rental: if one arrives by air, to you have to rent a car at the airport or are there other/cheaper options?

- lodging: I think if one has a car no need to stay right at the beach/resort and one can stay at other places. What are option within no more than $120/night per two?

car rental :
After baggage retrieval belts, before you exit the terminal , look to your right, plenty of stalls shouting at you for car rentals. The ones printed on their menus are overpriced - but you can haggle right down to the street value, always do your own research. Prices vary depending on the season ( peak / non-peak ). For eg non-peak would get you a Proton Wira for RM50, RM60. When it's peak , it could be RM85.

lodging :
agoda.com , booking.com . Seriously, these are the easiest websites to look around. It's cheaper than buying off the rack at the hotel.

for beach location you may try staying at Cenang beach. You go trip advisor for more info.

For me, I stayed at Helang Hotel (near airport) and Awana langkawi porto malai (infront of sea). Both hotels don't have beach.

I think with your budget, you can get many hotels.

I rent my car from someone giving out his name cards at airport at RM50 per day.

it is cheaper to rent a car. There is only a few cabs operating, plus driving give you the freedom to explore the island. Rent a car at airport which is cheaper than renting at hotels. An auto toyota vios is about RM40-50 per day. Rem to bargain!
