Obviously having a data plan on your phone is the convenient of the the 2 methods.

But I am curious, the phone will have longer/shorter battery life with which option ?

[ Phone + Data Plan ] vs [ Phone + Wi-Fi + Mi-Fi ]

I feel the former has direct data access, and thus puts less strain on the battery.

My thinking is 4G LTE consumes more battery life because of varying signal strength + GSM radio (voice) is always "ON"

Whereas, WIFI is more constant since the phone will be connected to the MIFI in close proximity with the MIFI taking the brunt of the power consumption.

Mifi will save battery on your phone but you have to charge the mifi. If you have several devices using the same sim data then it will save a lot more because your phone will not have to enable tethering.
