Just to confirm, this adapter is a passive adapter that does not require any additional power correct??

HDMI to VGA adapter referring to HDMI (from laptop) to VGA output to monitor.
(HDMI port on laptop, VGA port on the display)

(Not the other way round, i.e. VGA to HDMI.... I read that this adapter is "active" and requires a 5V power supply due to the lack of the 5V in the VGA cabling, as opposed to HDMI)? Thanks.

Am converting an ASUS laptop with a broken/cracked LCD to a "headless" unit that works with the monitor. not a very common thing to do but improvising on a solution based on whatever resource is available.

when does VGA require 5v power? never seen one before.

I use a HDMI to VGA adapter that costs less than $10 and it worked fine.

It is active. HDMI connector itself does not contain any pin for VGA, unlike DVI.

However, HDMI also provides DC power supply so it can be used to power some stuff, like splitters, switches, or even a converter.

i think when these two comments put side by side can understand why hdmi f to vga m doesn't need an external power cable, but vga f to hdmi m needs the external power supply. since the chip is an active and not a passive one as i had thought.
sorry I just check my physical plug, its a 24+1 DVI Male To HDMI Female Gold Converter Adapter ($2.59) and not VGA. Sorry for the error.

wait... yr one is laptop output dvi then the monitor input port is hdmi?
nope opposite, my U2412M doesn't have any HDMI input and I bought the adapter plug to convert the HDMI out (from my Intel NUC) to the DVI input of my U2412M monitor.

I just copy and quote the item description based off my Qoo10 purchase history.
