Dear all,

I'm sure some of us are aware of the latest Elite A-Series APU processors from AMD - Richland which running on FM2 socket. 1st thing 1st, enjoy the great video then only we talk... :D



Ok, done with the commercial, let us dive a lil deeper into the products line. Basically Richland is an "improved" version of Trinity APU series which launched Q4 last year - noticeably on higher frequency (on CPU as well as the iGPU), enhanced Turbo Core Technology, and support for DDR3 2133. This mean, Trinity users who wish to upgrade to Richland series, all they need to do is do a simple BIOS update on their motherboard then they are good to go.

Table below shows the available models Richland series are offering, ranging from Quad Cores (A10 6800K & 6700 to A8 6600K & 6500) to Dual Cores A6 6400K.

I am sure some are interested with the numbers this lovely chip can pull, so without further a due let's see what Richland has under its sleeves.

Oppps, pardon me for forgetting to include the details of the test bed, below is the components used for the whole bench session:

APU: AMD A10 6800K
Cooling: CM Seidon 120M with Artic F12 @ push-pull
Motherboard: Asus F2A85-M PRO (BIOS 6204)

Generic Tests
Basically, these tests are more on CPU performance. Memory & 3D performance will be on different categories. For each category, I will include both stock (4.1GHz, Turbo Core to 4.3~4.4GHz) & moderately overclocked (@ 4.7GHz) results, reason is as a mild tweaker it's impossible not to overclock a setup while u know what it is capable of. The overclocked setup details (voltages, HTT, multipliers & etc settings as per screenshot pf HyperPi 32M), while for stock, I only tinker with the voltage for lowest possbile (but bench stable), all power saving & auto boost features like C&Q, C1E & Turbo Core were enabled.

Next up, let us go for multimedia & productivity tests, or i can simply say it means how well can the chip perform in our typical day-to-day tasks. Usually this is the category which doesn't bother me much (as a mild tweaker) coz I certainly wouldn't complaint if my movies encoding is seconds slower than my FX based pc or others fast Intel setups. But still, results are results so compare we must...

Memory tests
Memory benchmark can be boring to those who are not interested but it is one of the "IN" things for overclockers. I'd like to apologize as I'm not able to churn out fantastic results, 2400MHz @ CL 10 (2T) is what I managed with my limited skills. I'm sure with better modules & knowledge, others will have better mileage. One good improvement Richland had over its predecessor (Trinity) is the capability of running IMC (CPU NB) & ram frequency @ 2400MHz while iGPU is overlocked @ > 1GHz. If my memory serve me well, I didn't manage to get all (IMC & ram freq as well as iGPU clock) overclocked at the same time on Trinity, but with Richland, I managed to have best of the 3 worlds...

I/O performance
Some might be keen to know how FM2 platform perform on IO testes. While not being as fast as Intel in term of speed, FM2 offers competitive performance. Pardon me as I include only Crystal Disk Mark while there are alot more tools available out there, besides, I/O tests never a forte of mine...

3D & Gaming performance
Here we are at the most interesting part in an APU review - 3D & gaming. Like its predecessor, Trinity, Richland continue to shine in iGPU performance. Architecture wise there's not much changes if we were to compare HD 7660D (Trinity) & HG 8670D (Richland). A small bump in iGPU core frequency (from 800MHz to 844MHz), shader processing units increased from 380 to 384, improved DirectX support (11.1 vs 11) & GPU memory has been boosted from 1866MHz to 2133MHz (sharing with system memory) are few noticeable features Richland had over Trinity. Do note that stock hybrid crossfire results are not posted not because I missed out the tests, it was more of BIOS/Driver issue which causing improper number of GPU detected (in this case 3GPUs instead of 2) ONLY when everything is on AUTO. When EVERYTHING is overclocked, proper number of GPU are shown.

Power consumption & Temperature

OK, I'm sure some if not most of us are interested to know the power consumption & temperature of Richland. Being an APU, it's very important to be efficient coz most of the time it will be use in HTPC, where energy efficiency matter the most, so as temperature (since HTPC cases are with limited air flow). I'm using BioShock Infinite as the reference program for reasons as follow: it supports multi-core processing (Yes, I get 4 cores max load @ 100%) as well as multi-GPU (for crossfire setup). One might argue it's not as heavy as Prime95/OCCT/Unigene or other more reputable stressing program but honestly speaking not alot of people will prime or run OCCT on their HTPC while Unigine stresses more on GPU.

For wattage measurement, I used Zalman ZM-MFC3 to get the reading during idle/load. Do note that different setup will give different power consumption, one can take this as guide ONLY since components used will greatly effect the wattage consumed. The readings below are inclusive of the parts & peripherals mentioned in post 1. While temperature wise, I referred to temperatures shown in HWinfo64/GPU-Z, might not be the most accurate (again) but quite reliable in my book.

The power consumption is not super accurate but it is within 5% to 8% measurable difference between the ZM-MFC3 and the Kill-A-Watt we use for load testing. It's not perfect, but it is close enough for most people.

Final Thoughts

APU from is AMD getting more & more interesting. While being quite similar to its predecessor - Trinity, Richland might not have a Wow! factor considering Trinity was pretty impressive enough. Apart from a small speed bump on CPU & iGPU frequency, improved memory controller, newer DX support, some might see the need for them to upgrade from their previous gen APU in Trinity. But... (yes, there is always a "but"), if one dive deep into what 6800K can offer, he/she might change his/her mind. You might ask why, so here are all my find outs after playin with the chip for almost 2 months...

On CPU performance part
While being only slightly faster in Turbo mode (4.4GHz vs 4.2GHz offered by Trinity), AMD managed to keep the rated TDP @ same wattage, which is 100W. A 200MHz boost won't turn Richland into a world beater but I will always welcome higher frequency w/o compromising power consumption & temperature. Richland is able to handle daily tasks like web browsing, word processing, light VM (using VMware player) testing & etc effortlessly.

On iGPU performance part
Again, while being 44MHz faster than its predecessor, the integrated GPU - 8670D is just a merely overclocked 7660D (iGPU in Trinity 5800K). But make no mistake, decent game like BioShock Infinite (plus few more which are not included like Dirt3, DMC, Diablo 3, Bastion *special thanks to bro cloudwan for d gift, CS-GO) can be ran at decent frame rate @ 720~1080p with some compromise on graphic quality, impressive enough for a integrated graphic solution. If more firepower needed, additional reinforcement in 6670D can be deployed. The hybrid crossfire setup managed to handle at least medium~ high setting in those mentioned games. And with the new crossfire compatibility with AMD HD7750 (source), 8670D can form a very potent combo for a decent entry level gaming PC with minimum cost.

On Power consumption & temperature part
If 7660D was star that stole the limelight in Trinity, I'd say power consumption, or at least the low voltage capability is the highlight of Richland. I noticed that Richland need significantly lower volt to achieve same clock as my previous 5800K. On stock (AUTO), the whole CPU (inclusive of all peripherals) pulled a 139W (on load) from the power socket, quite good for an APU with relatively strong iGPU. Pls bear in mind there's no undervolting done yet, & AMD tends to put higher stock voltage on all their chips. Most of the time their chips managed to run @ lower volt while being totally stable. If the ability to run higher clock (than default) with low voltage is not convincing enough, then perhaps the "cool" factor might be too hard to resist. With an entry level all-in-one cooler (CM Seidon 120M with pretty slow fan in F12) sitting on top of the chip, it run very cool @ 52.5'C on load @ a moderately overclocked speed 4.7GHz (*refer table 4) in a very cramped casing (QS-200 Lite). I strongly believe even with decent low profile cooler the chip wont be having (too) high load temp.

On Overclockability & tweakability part
If what mentioned above are good enough, then overclockability & tweakability offered by Richland would be the icing on the cake. I know it's sorta double-edged sword when it comes to overclocking/tweaking a setup. Some read up & times required to squeeze every MHz outta chip/ram/cpu nb are needed but if you're doing right, you'll be able to reap the reward. The 6800K is a sweet chip to tweak with, I managed to pass HyperPi 32M with 5GHz, with minor tweaks plus the help of my room's old air cond (@ 24'C) (i run the test with air cond on, not that I cooled the chip directly with it). Apart from going gun-ho on CPU frequency, a more balanced setup can be stroke, like having 2400MHz on ram & cpu nb and higher iGPU frequency (> 1GHz). With voltage & temperature are playing nice, one can have alot of combinations of overlocked setup to suite their computing needed. For example, for gaming intensive setup, one can have high iGPU frequency while keeping ram and/or cpu nb @ 2133MHz, while for those with stronger discrete GPU can push CPU & Ram frequency all the way to their limits. Yes, it might sound too easy on paper while not a walk in the park practically, but with a decent OC friendly board in ASUS F2A85-M Pro (or any other reputable FM2 mainboards), overclocking or tweaking an FM2 rig can be real fun (at least CPU, iGPU & CPU NB part, ram tweaking can be PITA sometimes). If one doesn't overlock, he/she can still play with undervolting to keep them as low as possible while being stable, good for saving electricity bill (though i doubt it will make much difference) & keeping everything cooled.

Last but not least, I would like to extend my gratitude to AMD SG for sending me the wonderful 6800K chip, as well as ASUS SG for their technical supports whenever they're in need. I hope this quick test (OK, not so quick after almost 2 months of testing) can serve as a guide/reference for those who are interested to get an APU setup for themselves. just wondering, cuz i might be getting a APU Based system:s22:
like mentioned, it's good for 720~1080p for lite gaming. more than enough for normal day-today tasks... :)

can be crossfired with 7750, but for d moment, there could be bug with driver/bios hence d performance issue. once d bug been fixed we can see a very good combo with minimal power consumption (since 7750 doesn't require external power) for lite~medium gaming. ;)

so far nothing has been officialized yet (from what i know) but bro eminus managed to have 'em x-fired successfully (thou with some bugs), should be fixable on next catalyst/BIOS release. I believe ASUS SG is aware of this issue. ;)

not really bro, as u can see from PCMark 8 benchmark, i clocked my Crucial Elite 1600 CL8 way up to DDR3 2133 CL9, even d samsung low profile is rated @ DDR3 1600 CL11. just test out how far ya sticks can go, i believe 1866 > 2133 is not really that hard (provided d ram ics are playin nice, hynix/samsung based should be able to oc effortlessly, play with main timing is enough). just try it out by using 2133 ram divider in BIOS will do, & of course, loosen main timing if needed. :)
