Quietest GFX Card?

Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a R9 290 gfc card. No intention to OC, just plug and play, therefore my main criteria is which is the quietest card. From what I have read in some of the other forums looks like MSI leads the pack, followed by Asus DCU2. Apparently Gigabyte Windforce is really noisy.

Anyone agree or disagree?

Msi very quiet personally owns one Asus maybe quiet but is the worst performer if I remember correctly. Sapphire not bad if you can accept the 2 years warranty as they yet to change to 3. And for gigabyte is always known for its loudness due to the triple fan configuration

From my experience, MSI twin frozr and lightning cooler very quiet and very effective.

This is a "best of the worst" query.

This card's TDP approaches 300W. Nothing is quiet with that kind of heat (i.e. at max fan speed). To put 300W in perspective, that's more than 3x the TDP of the i7-4770k.

Consider a less powerful card from sapphire with their Vapor-x series.

You sure is 300w? I run 2 of it and both max is 250w.

And you cant compare gpu power vs cpu at this era.

688 with bf4. But there are ways to get a great discounts at sls. Go to whichever shop you feel you like. Ask whats the best price they can give.

Lol you are right in that sense...

I still want to be able to run my games at high settings, but I also want it to be as quiet as possible. So therefore I have narrowed down to specifically the R9 290, and more specifically considering MSI, Asus, or even VisionTek Cryovenom (although the complexity of having to install the watercooling setup is quite a turnoff).

At some point later, I will eventually have to make a judgement call between performance and noise level. But for now I'm still trying to gather feedback from everyone.

And looks like the response is overwhelmingly in favor of MSI's twin dragons

Power consumption is a very ill defined thing, due to actual usage. Bitcoin mining is akin to a power virus, while different games stress the GPU differently. On top of that, some games are CPU bottlenecked. As for CrossfireX and SLI, the power consumption is not automatically doubled.

Likewise, the manufacturer's stated TDP depends on their definition as well (AMD, Nvidia, Intel define differently).

AMD is still not throwing us any useful hard numbers, but based on our performance data we estimate the 290 to have a nearly identical TDP to the 290X, leading us to keep it at an unofficial 300W. Lower-tier parts typically trade performance for power consumption, but that will not be the case here. Power consumption will be identical while performance will be down, so efficiency will be slipping and 290 will have all the same power/cooling requirements as 290X.

Just for reference since they didnt exactly measure the card alone accurately but on average its making sense since 290 is less efficient than 290x so this is pretty reliable.

Even TechPowerUp has the reference 290 listed as 275W TDP, I wonder how did you really measure your "250W" when we're talking about the upper limits here

And that wasnt a comparison to CPU, its for giving him some perspective as to how hot it really is. In comparison Nvidia's 780/780ti as of now is still offering VERY huge advantage in terms of TDP to actual performance.

Asus maybe performing better than msi but you have to pay a lot more too. For that 2 ot 3 fps boost paying for that premium is just not logical no offence, unless you are really into the design

Quietest is Sapphire Trixx if you just buy the retail box version with respect to other retail version.

If modded with water cooling , any card can be the quietest as long as you use silent fans on the radiator.
