Depends on your monitor resolution and also what type of games you wanna play.

Lastly the budget range you looking at.

If you wanna play the next upcoming AAA games then 290 would be suitable for you.

Put it in this perspective, all 290/x are designed to work till 95 degC, be it any brand, model, ref/non-ref design. The only difference is in the cooling. AMD designed it such that as long as there is a fan to push all the heat out, it is okay liao. But, brands take a step further by designing their own heatsink and fan to further cool the card, thus allowing it to push further and gain more performance.

Do not think of that $100 difference as a loss for 1 day when you buy the card. Think of it being worth the 2-3 yrs you r gonna use the card. Is it worth it for you to face the heat output and noise level of a ref card or just pay extra $100 now and need not worry so much about noise n heat output.

Note that if u r gonna watercool (it does not mean slapping an asetek AIO cooler and G10 onto it), then my comment above do not apply. By all means get the ref card as custom heatsink does not matter.

My 2 cents.

And btw, that $20 voucher cant be used to offset the purchase... And i believe there is a minimum amount to spend before you are able to use the $20 discount(?)

its used to offset future purchases. I think eplanet's price not bad though, comparable to SLS prices (after factoring in free delivery, points for discounts etc).

ASUS 780 DCII selling at $789, as per eplanetworld's rrp.

Someone just bought the same gpu at $729.

They have price cuts for certain products only. And if u r buying whole system from tradepac, you can bargain even more...

No matter what, it is still wiser to go for non ref card regardless.

Ref card for AMD is a no go for their r9 290/x. It is just a blower with no performance value to it. You cant overclock well, you probably throttle more often, and lastly a loud fan.

Buying a $428 r9 290 ref card is good for people whom going for full custom water cooling. Not meant for people to just water cool it by using a NZXT Kraken G10 or thinking to skimp on a GPU price.

You are just buying a ref card with everything you have to tone down. So whats the point having a chip that has a good potential for better performance? Yes one may question what so good about overclocking, or is the performance gain negligible? Well I would yes it is worth it. I got a better cooler and I got a much quieter card to use, I got a faster card out of the box, I game with confidence, so why not? Not forgetting, a cooler card will also be able to last longer as this chip is rated at 95deg anything around it that is working at that temp might end up being degraded.

Is the $71- $100 worth the cooler price? Yes it is. Not forgetting RMA for ref cooler is much longer period as it is not readily available in distros. Most of them will keep their own cooler themselves.
