Hi guys, looking to get a new build since my current one on the right seemingly died (no POST, no display output, no USB output - fan spinnings.)

Budget allocated for replacement is around 1.5K.
Budget style equivalent to premium economy - if that means anything.
Willing to spend on items with most price/performance ratio improvement.

Would like some advice on my selection base on the considerations below.

Build:
R7 1700 + ASROCK x370 SLI ~ $728
Cosair Vengeance LPX 3x00mhz 2x8gB ~ $2xx
NVME SSD ~ ???
NZXT S340 Elite ~ $189

Reusing:
GTX 1080
SSD + HDD
Power Supply?

Primary Usage: Overwatch / BF1 / CS-GO / Triple AAA titles / Netflix / MPC-HC (MADVR)
Secondary Usage: Torrenting / Encoding / Bitcoin Node / Streaming Gameplay
Occasional Usage: VM / other **** that uses many threads =:p

Principal Considerations:
CPU performance is a few tier above my current one (IPC / THREADS)
X370 = better components then B350 (cheap X370 vs exp B350?)
RAM - speed? timings? b-die? seems like a very hot topic
NVME SSD - will it improve my current needs - do i go small size or whack big size?

Secondary Considerations
Case - S340 elite for aesthetics - but not planning any led fan / strip - use more dull case instead? (require easy cable management and dust filtering cap.
Cooler - use including cooler or upgrade to noctua or AIO?

Thanks in advance!

ps. once I'm done with the 'new' ryzen build - I'm giving away the remnants of my old pc (case mono proc etc)

Just spend $9 more for the K4 model and get a lot more back in return esp. the debug LED display, better audio, USB 3.1 etc...

Why do people wanna skimp on that $9... ? :s22:

Hi guys, looking to get a new build since my current one on the right seemingly died (no POST, no display output, no USB output - fan spinnings.)

Same thing happened to my i5-4670k build! 2 days after Ryzen came out, my intel system died. Found that it is the Motherboard. Warranty for MB over by 2 months. So went and build a Ryzen system.

Build:
R7 1700 + ASROCK x370 SLI ~ $728
Cosair Vengeance LPX 3x00mhz 2x8gB ~ $2xx
NVME SSD ~ ???
NZXT S340 Elite ~ $189

Great choice of board. I didn't like the asrock fatal1ty k4 look. Prefer the white of Killer SLI. K4 has better audio but no use since I am using external DAC/Amp.

For ram, get the Corsair Vengeance LED / LPX 3200 Mhz 2x8Gb. Make sure its Version 5.39. They're Samsung B-Die. I got mine to work at 2933 at the moment. Maybe future update will get it to 3200.

CPU performance is a few tier above my current one (IPC / THREADS)
X370 = better components then B350 (cheap X370 vs exp B350?)

NVME SSD - will it improve my current needs - do i go small size or whack big size?

Overclock to 3.8Ghz or 3.9Ghz and you'll not feel any different from Skylake chips during normal usage.
For games, if you game above 1080p, GPU will be the bottleneck, so performance will be very similar between intel and ryzen.

RAM - I tried Vengeance LPX 3000 C15 ver 5.30 and it is Hynix, could not get it to boot above 2400. In the end, went back and top-up $20, exchange to Vengeance 3200 C16 Ver 5.39. It's B-Die. Proof here : CMU16GX4M2C3200C16

NVMe SSD is nice to have but not necessary. If you don't want cable clutter, NVMe is great. There was a video on Linux Techtips about traditional SATA SSD vs NVMe, not a big difference at all.

You are reusing three items and still require $1500 of budget?

nvme you can check this benchmark video if its worth it for your usage.

some application are noticeably faster, some other task not much.
Whether its applicable to you depends on your usage.

The part about SSDs that determine application snappiness relies heavily on low queue depth (closer to QD1) small file random IO performance. NVMe SSDs excel in high queue depth, large data transfers file copies (maybe 4k raw video editing).

Overall SATA and NVMe difference they're not far apart for regular users. Overall it depends on case by case basis than with a sweeping statement.

That said
-SATA MLC SSD are at similar cost/GB to NVMe TLC SSD
-NVMe TLC SSDs are about 50% higher in cost/GB SATA TLC SSD (higher capacities compared)
