Personally, i would not recommend 1st batch of cards till the newer batch comes in with better implementation.

Not unless it is used for custom WC. For that one might wanna buy a ref card or a 1st batch non ref cooler.

I would highly recommend Vendor Brands instead such as

AMD

- Sapphire
- Powercolor
- HIS

Nvdia
- EVGA
- Zotac
- Palit

In terms of AMD Vendors, my pick will be Sapphire on their TriX cooler.

In terms of Nvdia Vendors, my pick will be EVGA for their overall performance and custom cards that they made.

As for the 3 major brands, ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte, their specially made cards out there will be the best card that they have to offer.

Such as ASUS ROG cards, MSI Lightning or Hawk Cards, Gigabyte Ghz Edition 780.

Thanks bro.

1) R9 280x has been around for about a year so safe to say new cards on the market manufactured after Mar 2014 (roughly 6 months from launch of 280x) are not from first batch?

2) And to summarize from you and others' (like Jian19) comments:

Biggest brands are ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte.

Then got competing brands like Powercolor, Sapphire and HIS.

And so far most recomendations point to Powercolor, MSI and Sapphire.

Haha, so now my choice is easier. 1 out of 3 instead of 6.

Are there any major differences between the 3 most recommended versions?

Apart from prices they are about the same as their cards are mostly reference design.

If you buy the current 280x, most likely it has been revised. Cause during launch i have bought the 280x, after 4months down the road, they have revised the cooler and revised the other components as well. MSI card though.

As for a colleague of mine, he bought Sapphire r9 280x triX cooler version. He bought 1 during launch, and 5months down he bought another to Xfire, also different cooler and design slightly off a bit.

Among the biggest brand, if you are purely looking at r9 290x i think right now the best card out there custom made would be MSI R9 290x lightning edition. This monster is a 3 slot GPU and has a very nice temp! And best it is under promo now at $899. lol.

My asus 280x dcu2 is facing some minor artifacts problem(some random black lines will appear near bottom of the screen for a split sec then it will disappear by itself) while surfing net. Nothing so far while gaming. Bought 2wks ago. But it's not very frequent not sure if it will get worse over time lol.

I don't recommend powercolor not because of manufacturer but because of local distro - -

Just pick up the G-card and manually check. You'll understand the difference.

2 thing I did notice I always go for,

1) Beefy Heatpipes

2) Fan numbers and size.

Been using Powercolor R280X for almost half a year, only sometimes I hear the coil noise. Maybe my ears very sensitive, hence can hear the coil sound

been using earpiece, so loudness doesnt really affect me :o

i am planning to get a 280x for a htpc so i think any coil whine will be drown out by speaker volume.

i am just hoping that coil whine doesn't reflect a flawed or soon-to-be-spoilt card!

Got to check other things already. Should not be GPU issues. Might wanna check your settings. Have you done any overclocking?

hi roy , hmm i am currently using the latest beta driver for my amd card. I had blue screen using the normal driver , beta driver was much *better* as it just crashes without going into blue screen. Default setting with fan speed ranging from 50 to 70.The driver crashes happened to both the loan card *r9 280x* and my r9 290, i did reinstall the driver when i change the gpu

with my limited knowledge of 1x 7970 + 2x 280x (all sapphire btw), I can confirm coil whining is pretty common/significant/louder on 7970/280(same tahti chip) variant. From my experience coil whine does nothing to performance, artifact is only observed when I OC the card other than that pretty much doing its job well

The coil whine damn annoying. My 7970 paired with RM850 also got. Another com 280x with X660 also got. But 680sli with x850 totally no problem. Cannot be both 7970 and 280x so suay.

No I did not OC the card. But the card itself is factory OC-ed by asus. Anyway its not really bothering me as its not very frequent. Still a nice card compared to my dinosaur 460gtx.
