Yes, I'm here again, this time seeking your help with better information.

My R9 290 is running at -19mV, -15% power, 825 core and 875 Memory.

This is the Link to the GPU-Z readings leading up to the moment that it crashed. Decryption key : !sCHT3w2JoXEQIfVaPlwzhtZ80FHSS8i7InZqPfl28Gc

-Download the File. No Virus, or scan it first it's just a bloody picture

GPU is an R9 290, MSI Gaming, But fitted with G10 Kraken and Gelid kit. Item has no warranty left. I have a strong air cooling system, with fans providing copious amounts of cooling to the card and Vrms. Cooler used here is a Corsair H55.

Games I play which experience the crash incluse World of Warships and League of Legends in the past.

What I've Done So Far

PSU to GPU connected via 2 separate cables.

PSU is a 620w M12ii.

When I ran at -19 mV, +10%, 875 Core and 950 Memory, it too crashed after a period of time.

It crashes at default as well, which is +13mV, 0% power, 975 Core and 1250 Memory. Yes I know that the card might be faulty but I do not have an option to RMA.

Increased CPU SA BIOs offset to raise it above 1.020, trying to bring up the stability of the card. Read this off a Tomshardware post.

Clean install of Windows 10, DDU removal of old driver and reinstall of driver and Afterburner. I noticed that when I start the game, the settings revert to 975/1250, but I just reapply AB to force the settings down again.

Reapplied thermal paste on die. Arctic MX-4.

TL;DR

I've tried lots of stuff, raised voltages, lowered clock speeds, reinstalled drivers and OS. Temps barely past 50, VRMs cool, still crashes.

Any thoughts? I think I've tried almost everything, but I'm super welcome to ideas.

Is the card out of warranty or mod so no warranty?

bought from another person, waterblock cooler. no receipt. to be fair the seller offered to refund, but I lost the screws for the waterblock (or at least someone else did). So nope, it's either it works, or i sell cheap or throw, but trying to make it work for me first.

ts, how technically inclined are u? do u know how to mod the card's bios using RBE or willing to learn how to do bios modding? seems like only way to fix this is to mod the card bios to not run the clocks faster than what u want.

however, modding/reflashing the bios is risky for newbies and u can brick the card. since seller offered refund, then just take it...

and i also wonder how u managed to get such cool temps when the screws for securing/mounting the waterblock are missing?

Could the problem be the Catalyst drivers? I suggest you try one of the older drivers e.g. 13.9 or some other driver which supports your card. If the problem goes away, then you can exclude hardware defect and start looking for a more stable recent driver.

I have a 4870 which does not work well with drivers newer than 13.9, back when I was using the card.

@koenig

I have never tried the driver fix, because the legacy drivers don't want to be found easily. Perhaps it's just for my lack of looking, but I can never seem to find reliable sources for them. Perhaps you could show me where and i'll try?

Currently running the Beta driver from AMD website now though.

@monikernemo

I'll get right on that. I doubt that's the issue though, but it's worth a try.

@Chaoslegionnaire

I considered doing that, but I don't think the issue is keeping the clocks down, because AB is capable of doing it, as long as I apply it after starting the programs.

I'm also terribly afraid of flashing card bios. that's a little too far beyond me =D but worth a last ditch attempt.

@trento

yeah refund's out of the question. thanks. It's running a Kraken g10 now, not a waterblock.

power supply or motherboard

Tried power supply, replaced with another waaaay more powerful one and still the same issues.

Motherboard, well, it doesnt happen with my 7870 XT even with OC, so I highly doubt it.

Update:

Created a new setting, lowering the Core clock lower than ever, at a whole 20% below stock. Memory 'raised' to 20% below clock. -19 mV and -20% power. So far, I managed to run 2 Hours of gameplay without any crashes. Framerates in the game was very stable. about 58 FPS. Given, it's a little disgruntling to have to run at 4/5 of STOCK capacity, but that might still be more than what my previous 7870XT could handle. Im itching to run valley to benchmark, but unsure if i should stress the card... Maybe i'll give it a go.

Ok, tried that.

It works as though it were on 15.10, and blacked out at about the same time on the lowest settings i Posted. so Drivers might not really be the issue here.

So it's not temps (not outrightly so, at least), and it's not drivers, not software. What the heck is it. Faulty board that simply wont work?

There's one more thing you can try. If this doesn't work, I'm out of ideas.

I assume you are using two 6/8 pin connectors from the same cable. Try using two cables instead. This delivers a more stable power supply to the GPU.

Done haha.

I never did like to use the same cable. =x

I ran benchmarks yesterday, FPS at 46.9, scoring just below 2000. For a 290. Rather disappointing, but what to do.

I might buy a 290 in the future just to double check and see if the same problem persists, so anyone with a 290 set to clear please get in contact as well =D

Glad your problem is solved.
