Hi guys, as I have not much experience, would like advise. Currently my system mobo has 4 ram slots. currently i have 8GB RAM(2x4GB kit), if im planning to upgrade to 16GB, would buying a 16GB kit or buying another 8GB kit and adding it would be a more sensible choice?

Thanks

Buy another 2x4gb to add into your current 2x4gb.

If you don't ever think you will want to go more than 16GB, then do that. If you think you wanna leave room for expansion then I would get 2x8GB.

Before you buy, refer to motherboard manual and check if maximum memory is 16GB or 32GB. In the case of max 16GB, your board can accept only max 4GB per piece. For 32GB, it is 8GB piece.

Anyway, will different grade of RAM differs in performance by a lot? Say TridentZ vs Vengeance LPX.

Firstly check if your mobo can support whatever ram u r getting, but chances are if your mobo is quite old and the ram is newer, there wont be documentation stating compatibility. It doesnt mean it wont work though

If adding another 2x4gb, getting the same brand and model would be safer, but then again no guarantee.

Ram can be quite finicky, it often either works flawlessly, or refuse to boot altogether.

My recommendation, get a second hand set of the similar ram and try. Make sure theres live time warranty. If really cmi then bo pian have to buy 2x8gb

No, all that matters are the numbers, speed, channels, timings. These will show differences in benchmarks, but in real life u will be hardpress to see any.

All these performance rams just add a nicer cooler for you, which is kinda useless as ram really doenst produce much heat. Also all grades of ram, as long as they come from a reputable manufacturer, will have life time warranty, so its not like they are more reliable.

Thanks for the reply. I see that there is specially chosen chip for more premium RAMs like Corsair Dominator or G.Skill TridentZ? These specially chosen chips has higher room for OC-ing?
