Well you don't just change one setting and everything else unchanged and expect it to work.

Most motherboards are at least smart enough to use JEDEC-ish timings when you choose a higher clockspeed, but they will not automatically increase the voltage to 1.35V for you unless you switch on XMP. And not all RAM can run 3200MHz at 1.2V

So, ya, first thing, enable XMP.
A) Did it work? Yes? Good
B) Didn't work? Follow the below in order:

1) Manually up voltage to 1.35V, restart and test.
2) Set frequency to 3200MHz, timings auto by motherboard, restart and test
3) Then set the timings to whatever the RAM says it should have


Well, I've actually had this build for quite some time, the MAIN reason for this thread is because, "I bought 3200mhz ram, why am i only running at 1000mhz, is there anyway i can make it to 3200mhz ram." Simple as that.

Hmm, Let me try out what, and I'll update here and see how it goes

I didn't change anything actually. It's alr 1.35V.

Not sure about gigabyte interface but can u see the 2nd 2133mhz value beside the 3200mhz? Are u able to change that value to 3200mhz?

Ok nvm, that one is normal to have from what i see. Anyway, ur xmp settings looks ok, when u save and it reboots, does it go into windows on 1st attempt or does it do a bootloop then go into windows? One is ur xmp setting not saving at all and the other is the xmp setting not working and it resets itself.

The number in your monitoring dashboard (1066Mhz) is the true clock speed. The RAM is DDR RAM, so multiply by 2 to get the effective clock speed. For your target of 3200MHz you should see 1600MHz in your monitoring app.

I'm running non ryzen certified 4x16gb @ 3800-14-14-14-28 with my 5950x leh how? my PC will boom or not?

Since his other thread got locked, I just want to point out to anyone that the AMD logo on the ram are not "AMD XMP Only" RAM. Ryzen are relatively new boys on the block as compared to intel's, so RAM speed compatibility not as stable as Intel's. So those with logo means it has been factory tested to work with Ryzen CPUs/

Default clock speed (1066mhz)
Current Clock speed (1597mhz)

I'm done? Seems like it right?

Very nice, as long as it stays at that 1600 (approx.), you have achieved the overclock :D

Okay so let me try to understand more.

If i were to buy a ram that is not Ryzen Certified at 3200mhz(and i'm using ryzen cpu), I will need to overclock to use it at 3200mhz? If not it'll default at the lowest?


So the 3200mhz on the box means, "It can go 3200mhz" not "Out of the box 3200mhz?"


Is it 3200mhz per ram stick, or add together 3200 for 2 ram stick?

In summary, there is an organization called JEDEC that certifies standards for RAM. JEDEC only certify certain most commonly used RAM speeds/timings. These settings are stored in the SPD of the RAM sticks, so when a RAM stick is plugged in, the mobo will read the SPD and select the highest settings that is supported by your CPU.

Now this is where XMP comes in. In the earlier days of enthusiast overclocking, users had to test different clock speeds and timings manually. At one point, Intel introduced the "eXtreme Memory Profile" (XMP), which is basically additional memory settings stored in the SPD. These settings are not JEDEC certified but Intel tested and verify. This allows the user to use stored overclock settings instead of tweaking it themselves. So RAM makers began to advertise this kind of RAM as being "XMP-ready". AMD later followed suit, they called it "D.O.C.P." because of copyright but it's the same thing - factory overclock profile stored in the RAM SPD.

Most RAM today run at max 2666MHz out of the box. To go higher you will need to either a) manual overclock, or b) activate the stored XMP/DOCP settings.

The speed is for each individual RAM stick. But if you have more than one stick, they will run at the lowest common speed. So if you have one 2666 non-XMP stick + one 3200 XMP stick, they will both run at 2666. For smoother operation, always buy RAM of same brand/model. That's what kits are useful for. Some kits even feature binned sticks i.e. they belong to the same test batch and so have highest compatibility with each other.

Just to add on to ur last question. When u see ram advertised as 3200mhz, its not the clock speed but the data rate they advertise, aka DDR-3200. Technically its 3200MT/s not mhz (mega transfers per second). Ram runs at 1600mhz (1600 mega cycle per second) and each cycle for DDR ram provides 2 transfers per cycle, hence Double Data Rate (DDR). This works out to 3200MT/s (DDR-3200).

Transfer is a term to represent an operation of reas or write. Each transfer amount is determine by the bus width (bits per transfer), which for ram is usually 64 bit (8bytes) per transfer. So each ram will give a max speed of 3200MT/s * 8byte/T = 25.6GB/s of data transfer.

The purpose of two stick is dual channel, where the processor can write to both ram at same time, increasing the bus width by factor of 2, so now the bus width is 128 bit (16 byte) per second, and data rate is about 51.2GB/s max.
Why the ram manufacturer use ddr values instead of actual clock speed? Because big number make ppl eye pop probably.

The "Why" is probably straightforward to understand if we go back to the early days of SDR and DDR.

You have SDR RAM running at 133MHz which is called PC133

And then now you have a DDR RAM running at the same frequency. What do you call it. They called it DDR-266

Sorry to prop up old thread as I have some technical issues. I just bought new Ram 2 x 8gb with each stick at 3600mhz. It shows up in the bios at 2666mhz. I then changed it to 3600mhz to maximize the Ram capacity. Saved and exit and there is no display on my monitor. Had to reset CMOS in order to boot up again. Any reason why this is happening? My bios version has already been flashes to the latest version so it shouldn't be the issue. If I am unable to set it to 3600mhz, then I had wasted 20 bucks as 3200mhz ram is cheaper.

Did you change the timings and voltage as well?

This can be done either manually or XMP.

Meaning the timings (CAS Latency (CL), Row Column Delay (tRCD), Row Precharge Time (tRP), and Row Active Time (tRAS)), and voltage for the RAM .....

Different RAM speeds require different timings and voltage.

Question: How did you change the ram frequency to 3600mhz? U manually dialled into the bios or did it auto jump to 3600 when you turned on XMP? From your question i think you just want your ram to run at the advertised speed and forget about it.

I just scrolled down and adjusted it from 2666mhz to 3600mhz at the bios screen without any other actions. Saved changes and the screen went black.

Oh I do not know about that. Maybe this is the reason the bios failed to post after changing ram speed.
