Is it necessary to upgrade my current RAM to 16GB? I am only using normal RAM pieces. Not those performance types. :s11:

I don't see why anybody will need more than 8GB of ram. Unless you are those type that do ridiculous level of multi tasking of bloated apps aka Chrome/Photoshop.

CPU rendering or multi tasking need extra ram, normal gaming or usage don't need that much.

Luckily, I asked you guys here. My younger cousin kept pestering to upgrade to 16GB as it is a 'norm' in the PC gaming world. He said we must be on par with the world trend.

Yeah! My wallet cannot keep up with the trend though. :s13:

Hahaha...

Maybe let me put it this way:

4GB RAM - typical usage, office work, most web browsing

8GB RAM - most gaming, intensive web browsing, intensive office work

16GB RAM - photo/video editing, light 3D modelling, gaming on game titles that are highly unoptimized, virtual machines

32GB RAM - intensive photo/video editing, 3D modelling & animation, virtual machines

64GB RAM - virtual machines, RAMDisk

128GB RAM - too much money to squander

I don't find that there is a difference when I went from 8 GB to 16 GB. This was when playing Galactic Civilizations III on the largest map, which is very resource intensive.

8 GB is enough for gaming.

I find it's not about whether 8GB or 16GB is good enough for gaming. But rather, how optimized is the game that u need 16GB or can stick to 8GB.

RAM (a.k.a. "Random Access Memory") is considered the primary storage in any computer. If a game is not optimized (i.e. lousy or lazy developers), game devs can just dump files into RAM and not bother about them until the application exits. Games that are highly optimized have better and more hardworking game devs who take the effort to load the game files dynamically (i.e. only load files into RAM when it is needed). This type of optimization requires effort to write code to access secondary storage to retrieve files to primary storage, but is still much better than dumping all game files into RAM. Highly optimized games only take up about 2GB-4GB of RAM space (depending on intensity of game), compared to almost all 8GB of RAM space used up by unoptimized games. The RAM space saved can then be repurposed for other CPU activities, resulting in a less laggy computer overall.

The question is which game developer will do the RAM optimization nowadays? :s11:

Which is y the game industry is suffering from lazy game developers. Back in the early 2000s when RAM was scarce, efficiency and optimization was key to success. Now RAM is available in such huge capacities that we take RAM for granted.

I bet your cousin believe the marketing hype that i7 cpu is for gaming and getting an overkill CPU with shitty graphic card is what makes a good gaming pc.
