Random Freezes while gaming

Hi all

Recently I started to face this issue when during gaming, the pc will freeze and I have to reboot. I have done all the troubleshooting I can think of, eg replug everything, remove overclock but no success. The thing is the freeze doesn't happy all the time, some days I can play for hours no issue, while sometimes it will freeze twice in 1 hour.

I read that it could be due to a failing PSU (it is about 5 years old, just out of warranty).

Any laojiao got advice before I pull the trigger on a new psu?

What are your specs? Using mobile app here.

You mention you overclocked.. have you restore to default settings?

Is there any BSOD?

Overclocking will degrade the cpu overtime and it will result in requiring more voltage.

When was the last time you clean your pc?

Lol I cleaned my pc quite regularly, in fact, just yesterday I cleaned it but the freeze happened again last night.

I think my temps are OK, running i7-8700k bought last year, only oc to 4.8ghz, during gaming about 60-70+ degrees with air cooling. Gpu is msi GeForce 1080, also about 70+ degrees.

No BSOD, just freeze with no warning. The screen will just freeze and sound will cut out.

My PSU is a Andyson 950 bronze

Since the fan cleaned recently, apply a new coat of thermal paste to the processor, likely dried after 5 years. If the graphic card no longer under warranty, dismantle the shroud, clean the fan and apply a new coat of thermal paste to the GPU as well.

Temperature seems okay, do some stress test on aida64. Start with just memory test, then do cpu and gpu.

Should have mentioned most of my parts I bought last September. The oldest is the PSU (5 years) and my SSD (4 years), recycled from my last build. The build worked great till about May then this issue popped up.

did u check HDD for bad sectors?

try reseating the ram and see if it works.. otherwise might be OS/software issue too.. encountered one time. after reformatting, it solves the issue.

Sound like PSU problem to me. Able to borrow a psu from a friend or something to try?

Also you can just buy new psu since is so old already..

For ssd the symptoms for failure is intermittent detection, can happen during usage also and then hang the system.. but this usually have blue screen.

Thanks guys, think the only things I have not done are the stress tests and test for bad sectors. I don't know anyone that has a spare PSU sadly.
