Does having a good filter a must? Im using a hoya now too.

IMHO for UV filter is either buy the high grade multi-coated (expensive) one or don't use at all.
1. cheap low grade UV filter on any lens will degrade IQ
2. good high grade (expensive) UV filter will not degrade IQ (or very minimal/negligible)
3. buy good & expensive filter on cheapo lens (eg. kit lens, Canon 50mm F1.8) makes no sense
4. good high grade (expensive) UV filter on expensive lens = YES :)

That's why my <$500 lens I never use filters. =:p
But the Tamron 17-50 F2.8, I might consider...:s11:

moi ish using hoya hmc on my 55-300 ler
got overkill boh?

How much is your filter?
Hoya also got afew grades... =:p
If filter = $50, & yours is the DA retail version then it makes sense.
If it's DAL 55-300, then u calculate whether worth or not?

I didn't use filter for my 55-300. :)

Only use this on my DA*300

Not a must for me. But of cos depend on acceptable level.
I choose my filters depend on the type/grade/prices of the lens.

For 18-55mm kit lens for my Nikon D5000 I will only leaning toward Marumi or Hoya HMC, in fact I use Hoya HMC which had been serving me well.

For Canon EF L lens I only use B+W
Cos I can't afford the UV filter to compromise my IQ.
At the same time I need it as a protection to protect the lens and to completely seal it up for weather resistance.

I agreed on this. =)
Buy a good filters to protect your assets and yet dun comporise the IQ.

Nope, it should be good enough, hoya hmc is one of those good one and yet not so exp.

Filter actually act as a protection to your lens too. :)

That the main purpose of having filters on all my lens.
I also have hood for all my lens as an additional protection also. =)
Cos accidental do happen and you really never know when it would save your lens also.
