Thanks I finally read through this whole thread. One problem I see is that the SD card seems to get corrupted quite easily.

How often does it happen for everyone and is it avoidable/reduced with good practice or brand? If corrupted can the the SD card be reused as I don't want to buy a new SD card everytime it gets corrupted!

Corruption is not always, but sometimes it happens.

I'd get 2 SD cards to swap, higher speed ones are better, like class 10. If one corrupts, just format and reload the OS.

I run OSMC now with Kodi, and turbo-charged (overclocked) it.

I'm still amazed at this little Pi2.
It streams video smoothly.

Comparing to another android box I have, which claims HEVC, etc, etc. It can't stream 1080p smoothly compared to Pi2.

Now, wishing there is a Pi3.

Versus the RPi 2, the RPi 3 has a more powerful processor and built-in WiFi.

I am tempted to get a unit!

What pet project you have in mind ?

Was tempted to buy one and turn it into tv box.

But, the OS is like a KODI and does not allow installation of apk.

I used these as media boxes - mainly for KODI on OpenElec.

I'd use RPi as a sole purpose to run Kodi.
It runs 1080 vid very well too.
My other android mediabox claims quad-core etc, etc could not run 1080 vid stable.
So I'm kind of stuck with RPi.

Received my Raspberry Pi 3 recently and set it up to run Kodi (and Raspbian)! It's really easy to setup compared to the chromebox which I had previously.

Currently I am powering Kodi off and turning off the power switch when not using. What does others do when not using? I heard many people leave it on 24/7.

Also thinking to get a proper remote control for Kodi, currently using (IOS phone as remote). What remote control does people use cheap and simple?

I connect my soundbar usb to power Pi2.
When I turn off the soundbar, it turns off Pi2 and vice versa.

For remote control, I use a more expensive Mele F10 deluxe, since it can do quite a bit of programming for different boxes and also sports a full keyboard, easier to type your searches in Kodi.

In Kodi, the best thing to do is to sign up for trakt.tv
Then you just go their website, look for the movies/tv you like, click Collect or Watch and it'll appear in Kodi apps like Exodus, no need to do a more tedious search there.

Guys, I am new to raspberry but it sounds fascinating. After browsing this thread, am I correct to say that to setup a complete hardware box, I will need the following:
- Raspberry Pi
- Case
- At least 2A PSU
- Micro SD card
- Wireless Remote

Anything else?

I checked Raspberry PI and there are a few models. Which Raspbery Pi model is recommended if I just want to solely run OpenElec/Kodi mainly for streaming tv and movies?

Hi guys, one more question, can anyone enlighten me? What are the pros and cons of doing this DIY approach compared to let's say getting a Minix Neo U1? (Besides the price)

if u getting minix neo. whatever things u want to do limited by the minix.
if u getting raspberry pi. the limit is u. but bear in mind. its not straight out of the box u can play with it. need some reading. but the community is huge not to worry
