Anyone use raspberry pi as a universal remote controller?
Just got my model B+ and the IR LED.
Based on this article, http://www.stavros.io/posts/how-turn-your-raspberry-pi-infrared-remote-control, the voltage difference is OK (IO port 3.3V vs IR LED 1.6V), but I just want to confirm if I don't need to add any resistor.

Also, how to connect the IR LED to the IO ports, as both are male.
Is it this cable?

Don't think I will use breadboard as yet coz I just want to try first. I don't really know how to read the schematic but from the link you give, it seems that a transistor and a 10ohm resistor are needed? What is the transistor for? Then if I were to use the female-female cable, how do I connect them together? Create a serial connection from rasp pi IO port - ff cable - resistor - ff cable - transistor - ff cable - IR LED?

Btw the adafruit link is for IR receiver/sensor. What I want to do is IR transmitter.

Using it for mission critical application. My main Raspberry pi is Rev B with config stored in the SDcard. To failover to backup I want to be able to just pull out the SDcard and plug to the secondary unit.

New version now comes with micro-sd slot hence not suitable for my purpose.

Why can't you just get a microSD card and use an adaptor to put into the older Pi, then when you want to change over just take out the adaptor?

Maybe one should just store the configuration in a tiny USB thumb drive? Why should everything be stored inside the SDCARD? :)

A better approach is shift your root filesystem to a USB drive and only have the boot partition on the SDCARD/Micro SDCARD

Feel free to google more articles on this matter or just read off https://samhobbs.co.uk/2013/10/speed-up-your-pi-by-booting-to-a-usb-flash-drive

It has been in the common booting process of Linux to boot up with a boot image but running the rootfs elsewhere. That's how the Linux Initial RAM disk file comes about.

seem RS and element14 need to order due to high demand. :eek:try call them and ask when the earliest can get or pre-order.
