Cashews straight from the tree (truly raw) contain a toxic substance called
urushiol
(the same chemical found in poison ivy). Because of this:
Cashews sold in stores as “raw” are
not truly raw
They’ve already been
steamed or heat-treated
to remove toxins

What you can safely do
Store-bought “raw cashews” →
safe to eat directly
Roasted cashews → also safe (and tastier for many people)
In Singapore, cashew nuts sold as "raw" in the dry goods section are safe to eat directly, as they have already been heat-processed to remove toxins before reaching store shelves.
1. "Raw" Cashews Are Not Truly Raw
Truly raw cashews are never sold in retail stores because their shells contain urushiol, a toxic resin (also found in poison ivy) that causes severe skin rashes and is dangerous if ingested.
Healthline +2
- Mandatory Heat Treatment: To remove the shell safely, all commercial cashews undergo steaming, boiling, or roasting to neutralize the urushiol.
- Meaning of the Label: In the nut industry, "raw" typically means the nuts are unroasted (not cooked a second time for flavor), unsalted, and have no added oils.

Why the "Wash Before Use" Label?
While the nuts are chemically safe to eat, the "wash before use" or "soak before use" instruction is often included for these reasons:
Recommended Usage
- Sanitation: Since they are "raw" (unroasted), they may have residual dust, debris, or surface impurities from the initial shelling and drying process.
- Anti-nutrients: Soaking is a common practice to reduce phytic acid, which can interfere with mineral absorption and make the nuts easier to digest.
- Culinary Preparation: Many recipes for cashew milk or vegan creams require soaking to achieve a softer, creamier texture.
If you prefer the taste of unroasted cashews, you can eat them straight from the bag. However, if the label explicitly advises washing, it is a best practice to rinse them under running water or soak them for 2–4 hours to ensure maximum cleanliness and better digestibility.
If wanna eat as snack should buy from the snack section right?

Buy from supermarket got a lot jus roast the nuts and no added ingredient.usually those are seasoned and comes with all the "extras"

so do u wash them?I always buy raw and lightly fry in shallow oil. Small fire, stir and when golden brown, scoop out onto kitchen papers to remove excess oil. Cool them then put in jars. No added salt for healthy eating. Very easy and much cheaper. Buy the bigger and better quality ones and still cheaper. Put into different small jars so that you don't open 1 big container to eat. Can keep very long.
I also do the same for macadamia nuts.
