RAZER Core X Chroma modifications and RTX3090 GPU card

I have not bought any of the below-mentioned items yet

I would like to do some mods to the RAZER Core X Chroma eGPU casing. I have read the net and check the dimensions of the GPU card that can be put inside and it's feasible. The mentioned GPU card is the ROG STRIX RTX3090 O24G OC WHITE.

The RAZER Core X Chroma comes with a 700W PSU and 2x8-pin connectors

I would like to replace by a 850W PSU with a 3x8-pin connectors. Shortlisted PSUs include

1) Asus ROG Strix 850G
2) Corsair RM850X V2
3) Seasonic Focus GX 850

Which PSU do you think is the best? I prefer to buy locally and not order from overseas.

The RAZER Core X Chroma can be ordered locally online so not an issue here

Secondly, is the ROG STRIX RTX3090 O24G OC WHITE available in local store and what's the price? MSI RTX3090 GPU equivalent card is more expensive I believe.

I recommend Corsair out of the 3. Not sure who is the OEM for Asus PSU, and I've read that Seasonic Focus series struggles with current gen of GPU. Best for you to do some homework checking online before committing. For high end GPU, I suggest considering Seasonic Prime instead of Focus if it is not too expensive. Been using the Gold 1000W for some time with my RX 6800 XT, and it works stably.

u will also need to consider the size of the psu. yesterday went to help troubleshoot friend's core x, the psu looks to be of the sfx variety rather than full atx, even my small 450w atx psu was quite large beside the preinstalled one. i may be wrong though, but still do see this link for more details: https://egpu.io/forums/psu-cables/replacement-psu-razer-core-x/#post-52579

as for which id choose of the 3 u shortlisted, i think u should be ok so long with any, though the rog strix one may be poor value. rog oem appears to be seasonic, so quality wise should be top notch, but as with any other rog branded thing they do tend to be on the pricey side for no good reason.

I'm only using for the eGPU so 850W should be adequate. If I'm using the PSU inside an ATX tower with GPU, Mo, other peripherals, water-cooled and with fancy LEDs then a 1000W is the right choice

According to the link you posted it seems the RAZER Core X Chroma 700W PSU dimensions are as follows (within +/- 1mm)

88mm x 151mm x 142mm especially critical for the 88mm and 142mm dimensions

1) Asus ROG Strix 850G - 160mm(L) x 150mm(W) x 86mm(H)
2) Corsair RM850X V2 - 162mm(L) x 150mm(W) x 86mm(H)
3) Seasonic Focus GX 850 - 140mm(L) x 150mm(W) x 86mm(H)

Comparing the dimensions so would not be hitting the 88mm. As for the 142mm is it the L or W? If it's W then none of the mentioned 850W PSUs can make it

Note :-

In the link someone recommended the Corsair SF750 (Platinum) or the Silverstone SX800-LTI (Titanium) as drop-in replacement. Apparently, these 2 are of SFX form factor which means they are suitable as far as dimensions are concerned

Asus PSU's OEM is Seasonic. With Asus adding their own spin like their own cooling fans and the OLED displays on their higher end PSUs. Based on the Seasonic Prime series.

Is there a specific reason you want to run a thunderbolt 3 GPU box with a 3090 instead of just building a new rig or just replacing your existing graphics card with the 3090?

Anyway, on your power supply, for a SFX power supply, this is one of the best you can buy and will have zero issues. Always get a good PSU.

I'm planning to play 8K@60Hz and 4K@120Hz games.

A GTX3090 is needed for stable 60FPS games at 8K@60Hz which is better than the GTX3080 card. Also, you don't need to disable some features unlike in the GTX3080 card. For OC a PSU with 850W or more is required unless you are doing normal work where a 750W PSU wil do the job. Lastly, the PSU (best in SFX form factor) and GPU card must fit into the RAZER Core X Chroma case

There are a few options I can choose

1) DIY/Buy Pre-Built gaming rig
2) An eGPU with a non-gaming laptop
3) A gaming laptop
4) A PS5/Xbox Series X console

After evaluation, for

1) Too big on my desk. If put under desk I won't be able to enjoy those fancy LED lights and also device connection cabling will be difficult
3) Currently, no gaming laptop with GTX3090
4) No support for 8K@60Hz. 1440p not supported in PS5

So the option is to use the RAZER Core X Chroma with a GTX3090 card and replace the default 700W PSU with a SEASONIC 1000W Focus GX PSU. Of course need to factor in the cost for the non-gaming laptop with equally powerful CPU. One with Tiger Lake CPU will do the job nicely

This method has a smaller footprint on my desk but it has a few cons

1) TB3 limitation
2) PCIe 3.0 slot in the RAZER Core X Chroma. The GTX3090 card comes with PCIe 4.0 bus. This is not too bad as reported on the net for gaming between PCIe 4.0 vs PCIe 3.0. Only a few FPS difference when gaming at 4K

8K gaming is really just marketing hype. At the size and distance, it doesn't make practical sense. thunderbolt will restrict performance to the point where the housed 3090 might lose out to an ordinarily mounted 3080.

Asus has a new laptop that uses a proprietary connector to alleviate the bottleneck. If you are interested can check it out.
Yes, I'm aware of that. But it comes with a RTX3080 card only. It's the

Asus ROG Flow X13 + XG Mobile eGPU​




Cannot upgrade the GPU in future and the ROG Flow X13 doesn't have a HDMI 2.1 port which means cannot display 8K@60Hz

Actually, I'm now considering using a Mini-ATX case with a RTX3090 card. I went to SL SQ recently for a quotation and was quoted coming to $9K for a setup to run 8K@60Hz

Mini-ATX cases under consideration

1) Sliger SM580 Mini-ITX Case
2) Cooler Master NR200P Mini-ITX Case

I have watched the YouTube videos on both the cases and I think the Sliger SM580 is better in terms of noise and thermal for the GPU/CPU just fan cooling using 4x140mm fans. The Cooler Master will likely need 7x smaller size fans. Add the radiator in for both as well for the CPU cooling

PSU - Either the SEASONIC Focus GX-1000W (80 Plus Gold) or the Silverstone SX1000-LPT (v1.1) 80 Plus Platinum (depending on which case)

One thing I don't understand is both the cases come with a flexible PCIe 3.0 x16 riser cable to connect to the RTX3090 PCIe 4.0 connector. Is there a drop in speed/data here? I thought the RTX3090 PCIe 4.0 connector should sit in the Mo's PCIe 4.0 slot to maximize its speed or at least the flexible cable should be PCIe 4.0?

Mo is the ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Impact AM4
CPU is the AMD RYZEN 9 5950X 3.4GHz (16C/32T)

Proper Pcie 4.0 risers that meets the PCIE specification are actually still rare. Anyway gaming wise i don't think it will affect that much, at most will see 1-2fps dip at high resolution. MIght change in the future with directstorage and stuff but u can take a wait and see approach. A good quality riser is more important.

Also, unless u play games where its heavily cpu bound, 4k/8k gaming is bottlenecked so much more by GPU that a 5800x/5900x and 5950X has no difference despite costing ~50% more.

Just checked

The ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Impact AM4 Mo is Mini-DTX and the Sliger SM580 Mini-ITX Case only supports Mini-ITX Mo. Mini-DTX is longer than Mini-ITX

So only left the Cooler Master NR200P Mini-ITX Case which is available at SLS and can take both Mini-DTX/Mini-ITX Mo

Actually, the videos below show RTX3090 installed in Mini-ATC casing. Very impressive indeed.








I went to one shop and talked about my setup and the shop guy said with such Mini-ITX casing the GPU temperature will be very high because of poor ventilation and difficulty in installation due to the tight space. He suggested I take a slightly bigger Micro-ATX case instead. Should I abandon the Mini-ATX case and go for the Micro-ATX case?

There are some recommended ones here. Also, would the Mo be of different size and cheaper? Cube-shaped design don't attract me. A tower kind of design looks nicer. One which keeps noise and temperature low is my priority

8k60fps on a 3090 is a gimmick as someone already said.
For AAA titles, you will be looking more at 8k30fps or even lower really.
So be prepared to temper down your expectation.
Maybe next gen rtx4000 or radeon 7000 series will be able to handle 8k60fps.
