Rec DIY build for RPG games

hi gurus,

can help recommend me a decent build that will last 3-5 years for mainly those rpg games?

i'm buying this for a friend so I only know he plays those popular rpg games.

budget: 1.5K including monitor (but can stretch abit)

diy now very hard to do without paying hugely inflated pricing (over 100% markup) for gpu. suggest u find some prebuilt/system integrator like mansa, dreamcore etc if need urgently. otherwise, next best option is to sacrifice some graphical fidelity and get a cpu with integrated graphics, which no doubt is weaker than systems with dedicated gpu but at least u have a working pc that can do some light gaming.

thanks for the reply. is the gpu market now bad? sorry i've been out of the news for the past 2 years. what's the cause of the gpu mark up?

edit: would rpg games need that much expensive of a gpu?

Lol your description very vague leh. Can describe what games exactly or not? And what screen size and resolution? 金庸群侠传 25 year old game is also RPG game. Based on your description, I can only recommend the following:

CPU: Intel 10th/11th gen or AMD 3000 series
Motherboard: B560/H510/B450
Storage: 1TB
RAM: 16GB
Graphics: any card minimum 4GB

I looked at the price list, even a gtx 1650 super cost around $500. I can get about 60 fps 1080p, max setting
on almost all modern rpg games on it.

If that's the case, then get an i5 10400/10600K/11400/11500 with a B560 motherboard or a Ryzen 5 3600 with a B450 motherboard. 5600X is too premium for your budget, so stay away from it.

Get 1TB Gen 3.0 NVMe SSD and 2x8 GB 3200MHz CL19 RAM. Don't need to get XMP version, although if you manage to find such a kit that is cheaper than standard CL19 RAM, go for it.

Get a good airflow case, micro ATX minimally. Tecware Nexus Air is a good one, I personally used it.

Get a 450 - 600W ATX size PSU.

Finally, get a 1660 Ti or RX580 8GB.

All-in this should cost just nice about $1500.

1650? Got stock then say lar, even got, also around 650

Cheapo mb+cpu around 200 but you don't want the cheapo one to pair with 1650
A okay one will cost around 350

16gb around 130 and you need that much ram for smooth gaming

Still need psu, casing, fans and storage

Either ts up budget to 2000 or wait 5600g apu out lar.

Did a quick check on various platforms and here's what I got:

Intel i5 10600K + Asus TUF Gaming B560M Wifi - $615
2x8GB 3200MHz CL16 RAM - $115
1TB Gen 3.0 NVMe SSD - $155
Scythe Mugen 5 Rev. B CPU cooler - $70
600W PSU - $90
Tecware Nexus Air M mATX case - $75
Gigabyte GTX 1660 OC - $700

Total $1820 without monitor. Must add in Windows 10 activation also (ownself go find what is best). If use a non-K part, can -$70 for CPU cooler. If go Ryzen 5 3600/X + B450 board, can save another $50 - $100. So all in can still get at around $1700 +/- $50 without monitor

So yes, @SkyShroud is right, budget must increase.

But seriously, if building a new system, just go SLS and get all the parts together la. May get a better price on GPU and can try bargain bargain a bit also. SIs like Aftershock also offer similar specs for similar prices.

if u are already suggesting using a 600w psu, i might chip in and say get a r9 290 off taobao for about $200, should provide roughly the same performance as a rx570/gtx 1060 3gb. so not too much lost in the way of performance (~20%), but at less than 1/3 the price. once prices normalise can sell off maybe slightly under $100 and get a far more capable gpu for $700 or less.

These are some examples of decent offerings around the $1.6k price point. You don't have to get from AS, but these are the kind of specs you should expect/be looking for at this price point. Do note that by getting from system integrator like AS, you should factor in some cost for after sales support as well.

I personally will recommend getting the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro (3070) from Shopee. Cost around 2.5k on the promo period and still excels even though the gpu is 120/130w.
