Recommend a desktop replacement notebook?

Hi fellows. Looking for some recommendations here for a notebook that will be used for video playback, as well as some office productivity work; specifications required:

processor: haswell platform (i5 will be enough)
15"/15.6" with multi-touch, preferably IPS panel & fullHD resolution
comes with Win8.1 off the shelf
comes with blu-ray player
dedicated graphics card
SSD not required
the challenging bit: budget is around $1400 & below

Any recommendations? I can hardly find laptops that have the newer Haswell chips & a basic optical drive already; let alone one with a blu-ray drive. The Asus N?50 comes with every spec above, but, it costs $1900. So, looking for some assistance here.

To be honest, I think it is very dif if not impossible to get that kindda specs with the budget. Mainly for manufacturers to offer a full HD IPS panel with Bluray drive, they will usually charge a premium. In fact, I am not aware if there is any 15 inch laptop running an IPS FHD monitor, at least locally.

If remove the FHD & the Blu-Ray drive but still want the IPS panel, will the recommendations be a lot more?

Most if not all 15.6" these days are already full HD. You may have to start looking at smaller form factors like 13" to 14" to fit your budget.

Put aside the IPS & blu-ray, I'm having hard time finding full HD 15.6" models. Most of the full HD that I came across are 17".

I've got 2 updates to my qn:

Qn1) so may I safely say, if I want systems to arrive with Win8.1, I'll probably have to wait say 3-4 months more?

Qn2) where to check out MSI laptops at the more mainstream shopping areas?

Even if you have windows 8 cant you just perform the update to 8.1? It's supposed to be a free update via the app store for Win8 users.


MSI laptops can be found at Funan or Sim Lim. Should be easier finding at funan.

Want to use $1400 to buy $1900 specs? No way, impossible.

ASUS N550 at $1,699 during CEE so I guess can get it at $1,599 if bargain a bit but it is GT 750 DDR3, not GDDR5.
