Recommend a PSU for GTX 3080

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to get an Asus Tuf 3080 OC, whereby it is recommended to pair it with a 850w psu.

I currently use a Seasonic 750w Focus 80+ Gold, but I read online that due to power spikes with the 3080, my current psu would not suffice.

Therefore, would like recommendations of a good 850w psu which will not break the bank.


Other specs of my com if required:

MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC
Ryzen 5 2600x
2 x Klevv 3200mhz 8gb
3 x 5400rpm HDDs
1 x Adata xpg sx8200 pro 512gb nvme m.2
1 x Asus STX II Essence

Honestly based on your current system specifications no need to upgrade PSU.

Instead I suggest consider UV your GPU for better performance against heat generating during gaming.

I am using the same PSU and i use RTX3080. It is is more than enough.

You can buy Seasonic Focus GX-850 850 watt.
The current only sell away but take note second hand PSU like the model you have.
At the most can sell around $100 whether new or old.

Value will be lower if you don't have all the cable.
I just sold a Seasonic Focus Plus 850 watt $100 only despite still have warranty.
Kind of low price for such series.

TBH, there is NO NEED to spend to go up to 850W when 750W gets the job done and plus the hassle of selling the PSU in low price... then by all means.

Changing PSU also means cable management all over again if you have not thought of that.

Of cos - time and money is yours, do what you deem fit.

It is more than enough. I have been rocking 3080 with 5900x since day 1 with 750w.

Ya playing at 1080p will bottleneck, but once TS use the nvidia control panel DSR setting to upscale to 2k or 4k the difference will not significant he can try first before deciding on next CPU or monitor upgrade. Good thing TS using Ryzen system he can upgrade to zen 2 3000 CPU series easily for the price of PSU to get a second hand 3000 series CPU.

I guess TS main issue will be getting a 3080 at a reasonable price. PSU is the last of his worry.

Would like to get the 3080 now as I currently have some time to enjoy (resigned due to a rubbish job and just want to enjoy while I still can), and prices seem technically not that bad now la lol

750W will do. 850W will make you feel extra good while playing your games. One thing you need to make sure is does your PSU have enough PCIe rails to match your GPU input. I can't remember how many does the TUF 3080 has, whether 2 or 3. If is 2, no problem. 3, better check... lower capacity PSUs often don't have more than 2 rails for the PCIe..

it's expected, in some games 3600 also can hit 100% CPU usage lol.. in the video that battlefield alr hit like 83% and that's like only a minor portion of the game.

I am using the same PSU for a 3080 Ti also no problem

Generally, the recommend PSU requirement is higher than actually required because manufacturer will put in a buffer since they don't know what sorts of PSU their user is using. Most RTX 3080 will run fine with a good 750W. While there were some feedbacks in the past that the Seasonic Focus Gold were not handling the RTX 3080's transient power well, the only way you can ascertain if it works is to try it. I believe it is not a widespread problem.

Better to prepare more wattage than lower and need to buy again, also PSU efficiency will degrade over time unless buying new every time is not an issue

With future proofing in mind, nowadays is better to just go for 1,000W as GPU power consumption gets hungrier with every new generation.

Years ago for as long as I can remember, 650W was the safe bet to support any single GPU. Those days are gone .
