My recent 15 inch laptop is on the verge of dying and am looking possibly to buy a new one. I'm currently in uni and just need something portable and for word processing and video processing. 15 inch was a no go when bringing to school but great for home use.

Preferably 13 inch, budget around $700. Probably either a pentium or i5 with at least 4 GB ram. I currently have an SSD in my laptop so I am thinking of swapping the HDD in my new laptop for that. I dont mind swapping the ram for 8gb in the future if I feel it is too sluggish.

Willing to increase budget if I can find one with the following specs:
removable battery (what a rarity these days..)
ac wifi card
matte screen
long battery life

Currently considering the Acer ES1-311 at $599 but not sure if it suits my needs.

Hello!

What video processing software would you be using and would it be often that you would use it?

Cheers.

Hi so sorry I meant video streaming :s22:. Just youtube and what not.

Thanks!

No worries :s13:
I was at city square mall this afternoon - and saw an Asus that was $799 / $899 with fairly good specs.

Will upload pics later!

Cheers

You might want to go to lenovo website and register with your school mail to look at discounted laptops
Most of them comes with anti-glare screen, i presume it should be matte
Your other criteria is up to your selection of model already

The Acer is pretty good stuff. Just swap out the HDD for SSD and you have a dirt cheap laptop that flies. You can even afford to add another 4GB of RAM at that price point.

PC Clinic in SLS will do the swap for you for only $30 including cloning. Otherwise buy a 120 GB drive for about $120 and clone the OS from the existing HDD. And you get a 500 GB portable drive. Throw in $30 to get a USB3.0 HDD enclosure and you get a fast portable backup drive. Very good deal.

It really depends on what you are after... if it's just office productivity with an SSD, it's really not much of a wait...

His hard trying to demean other options is too disgusting :s13:

There there! Let's not go there shall we? :)

But it really does depend on specs vs usage.

I do own a core atom (Z3775 to be exact) hybrid and initially I have my doubts as to whether it can do the things I want it to do - general web surfing / video watching / office editing

...... the core atom hybrid won me over though - day to day tasks can be easily done with it and there isn't any unacceptable lags - such as those olden times where any UAC prompt in vista would freeze one's laptop for a long time rendering it useless until it responds.

Most things we do nowadays are on the cloud or online so using a core i7 6700HQ to surf hardwarezone for instance is nice but definitely overkill :s13:

In fact I do use the tablet more often than my other two laptops owing as it does whatever the others can do with exceptional battery life.
