Hi,

I am looking for a NAS storage to store all my files so that i can access it via the many computers/devices at home. I would also like to have a cloud access, so that i can also access my files outside of my house. Please recommend me any device that is reliable good and preferably cheap. I am currently looking at D-Link DNS-320L, D-Link DNS-327L and Synology brands :s22:

gonna hoot 1 at the upcoming comex.

if accessing from outside the house the transfer rate doesn't matter vs the connection rate from internet.

internally are u transferring using wired Ethernet (Gigabit?) or wireless? Again if it is Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) or wireless then the transfer speed is usually bottlenecked at the connection rate. If u could bump up the wireless to AC would help but I believe it is still challenged there, particularly since many of us use phones and tablets to connect nowadays.

Compare the NAS at smallnetbuilder.com, great site for info. NAS performance directly linked to CPU, RAM and OS. Basically if money no issue get a Synology. It is different tier imho from Dlink and WD brands etc. But I use both of the latter for years without problems or performance issues coz it suits my needs which is - price! :)

this is my setup. i am planning to put the NAS together with my singtel fibre internet. I will be streaming movie via the TV most probably via wired connection. but for laptop that is at the room, will be using wireless access most of the time for file downloading/transfer/storage etc. Actually most of the data stored in the NAS will be access via wirelessly cos i have afew smartphone at home too. and i also want to access those data when im outside.

ok quite typical setup for today's digital home use. For your wired LAN is it gigabit or 100Mbps fast Ethernet? if Cat 5 ethernet you are looking at a 100Mbps limit anyway. You can do all these workloads via wireless as well should be no problem if you can get a good signal and speed, varies according to interference. Smartphones and Tablets devices are bottlenecks today too as they typically hv N wireless or AC wireless single antenna (for high end) and make sure u hv a better cpu/gpu/RAM combo.

I don't watch 3D movies so can't be sure if that's supported but HD 1080p type should be no probs.

Say u went out with your digital video cam and shot a whole day of videos and now wish to upload 10GB of videos/photos to your NAS in living room at one go.... that is when you will feel the difference of wireless vs wired vs wired GB LAN. :) Still a good wireless setup can still get you around 150Mbps transfer if lucky on 5Ghz band. Unless you are on GB LAN u won't be hitting the max transfers on these NAS imo.

Buying NAS should be based on NAS features, stability, support and hardware quality. That pretty much sums up why Synology is a better brand. As mentioned, if just mobile app, cloud access, upload and streaming, many NAS can pretty much do it these days. I tend to go for multiple cheaper low end NAS vs 1 single high end one but that's just me.

Actually i seldom use the wired PC because its old. But i am planning to get a new PC and also a macbook. PS for being a noob in networking, how do i check if my wired LAN is it gigabit or 100Mbps fast Ethernet?

Most probably streaming 720p/1080p movies ba.. I just want to make sure that transfer rate is fast from my laptop to the NAS , NAS to TV , smartphone to NAS etc etc. I saw ppl stating that the d-link 320L transfer rate is only 20-30mbps while the d-link 327L is much better at 60mbps?

I think u are referring to MBps (megabytes per sec) vs Mbps (megabits per sec). Anyway that's another story. Basically yeah it looks like 327L has more powerful proc and more RAM so better transfers and it should be a higher end offering vs the 320L. Again back to main point, unlikely your NAS will be bottleneck in your scenario so spend your money wisely. :)

A super old 320 (no L) NAS still transfers enough imo for your purposes.
See here shadowandy – my life stories - D-Link DNS-320 - Layman speed test - shadowandy - my life stories
I'm sure the 320L will be better than this.

My advice:
1. Synology brand NAS if you can afford it, u can't do much wrong going with them. Check offers during COMEX and compare different models (they hv many).
2. If want cheap and good I'd go with Lenovo Iomega EZ Media & Backup Center (3 TB) at Challenger for $179, don't need to wait till COMEX :) Heck get two of it for backup still cheaper (that's better than RAID-1 imo). https://www.challenger.com.sg/products/sub_category/DESKTOP-HDD/2/D/#

Read Anandtech review a 2TB unit which houses a Seagate 7200rpm drive. If I check on Seagate 3TB drives on its own it's about $145 (2y warranty) which makes the NAS device itself merely $30+ w 3 years warranty? Great deal in my view.

gonna hoot 1 at the upcoming comex.

This is my suggestion to you :

1. Setup a low end PC and load it with Windows 8. Connect it to your router via a LAN cable.

2. Put in 2 harddisk and configure them to run in RAID1 (for redundancy).

3. Register an account on 360 and get 36TB (not GB) of cloud storage.

PS : The files I stored on cloud are important files which I want to protect but NOT confidential files which contain client's details or credit card numbers, etc.

4. Download the "360云盘PC同步版" at 360. This will allow you to "sync" all the files in a particular folder with your cloud storage.

In this way, you'll have redundancy on the data in your office + cloud backup.

I would not recommend YunPan for cloud storage due to its pathetic upload speed, it start to throttle once it hit at around 2GB of upload data.

Do you mean that once we upload >2GB, it'll become slow?

For pictures and files, it should be ok. But for streaming of video, it'll be highly dependent on the network.

Yah but not quite sure whether it is 2GB daily limit but have read others talking about it. Lately the upload speed have become even more erratic, use to be about to hit 1-5MBps but now it's like <100KBps even after waiting 24hrs.

Add: Just to confirm my finding, after uploading a number of files totaling 1.1GB (upload speed of around 2-3MBps) it drop back to under 10KBps!
