hi guys,

my PSU just blew and there are liquids dripping so i guess its enough excuse for me to get a new rig.

anyways main usage are

-3d modelling, no animations(sketchup, kerkythea)
-video editing (sony vegas, premiere pro)
-image editing (photoshop, gimp)

budget is 3k without monitor and casing as i would like to reuse my monitor and lancool k62 casing. my monitor is samsung t240 however i do not know whether its good enough... although it has served me well for the past 3 years

thanks a lot in advance :)

CPU+ Mobo: MSI B85-G41 PC MATE+ i7 4790 (519)
RAM: 2X CRUCIAL PC 12800/1600MHZ DDR3 CL11 VALUE RAM (8GB) (198)
GPU: POWERCOLOR R9 280 3GB TURBODUO (285)
SSD: SAMSUNG EVO 840 250GB (179)
HDD: TOSHIBA 1TB 7200RPM (69)
DVD-RW: LG 24X DVD-RW SATA OEM (25)
PSU: SEASONIC S12G-NON MODULAR 650W (129)
OS: WINDOWS 7 HOME PREM (120)

Total cost: $1524

Buy at PC Themes, #04-15, and ask for discounts. DIY yourself. If you can't into DIY, get PC Themes to assemble for you for a fee.

Notes:

1) Out of your list of editing programs, only Sony Vegas actually benefits from hyperthreading, maybe Kerkythea. Not too sure if it is OK to put in an i7 or not, but an i7 is included anyway.

2) 16GB RAMs are included in the system for your editing needs. Not sure if there is enough RAM or not, may want to get Windows 7 Professional ($180) instead so that you still have the option to upgrade to 32GB RAMs as Windows 7 Home Premium only supports up to 16GB RAMs only.

3) A Powercolor R9 280 is added to enable you to use GPU based acceleration in Sony Vegas, Photoshop and Premiere Pro for faster rendering.

4) A Samsung 840 Evo is included as the fast read and write speeds of the SSD will allow you to be able to open/save large media files faster and decreasing production times.

5) Not sure how much HDD space do you need for your media files, you may want to upsize your HDD accordingly.

6) You may want to use your remaining budget to buy a 1440p monitor. Can get a Dell U2713 for $749 or if you do not mind having to send your monitor to South Korea yourself for RMA, get a Qnix monitor for $300+ at Qoo10.

7) Got any parts that are reusable from your old rig?

Lolx most parts are burnt. I managed to salvage the HDD and I guess I can transfer the windows7 home premium license.

Do I require a workstation grade graphics card eg. Quadro or Firepro?

Thanks a lot for the suggestions! :)

No, your programs will perform just the same with a gaming grade Geforce/Radeon GPU, so might as well pick the much cheaper option.

this can be done, at the worst case just need to call Microsoft and use automated answering to the installation id to get the activation code again.

1) Would suggest paying $19 more for a Samsung 840 Evo 256GB SSD as the faster read/write speeds of the Samsung 840 Evo will allow you to open and save large media files faster.

2) Think the Superflower HX600M no stock already, get a Seasonic S12G 650W Non-Modular variant for $129 instead.
