Recommend mobo + ram

Looking at getting a 3900x while waiting for the 4000 series.
Was wondering if folks could recommend me a suitable mobo + ram
Would air cooling be sufficient? Wondering if i could recycle my case.

With the 4000 series on the horizon, IF you have a working system I would hold off for 2 reasons: -

1. Once the 4000 series is released you can consider the 3900X equivalent CPU
2. Purchase the 3900X after the launch of the 4000 platform as the price will be pushed down

Looking at your specs I do understand there might be some urgency as the CPU you're currently using was launched in 2006 (if that is your current setup).

As for reusing your case, do let us know what you currently have as the 3900X does run rather toasty so it's highly recommended that you look into the cooling and airflow. Also let us know your budget so that the right recommendation can be made on other components. As you are looking at the 3900X then an X570 motherboard is recommended but you can either go for the cheaper motherboard or the mid range depending on your needs.

thanks! haha im not really using this>> rig now. that was my old rig. i was using msi h97 pc mate + 4790k & 4460, gtx970 and gtx1080 (2 PCs, one for me, one for my wife) but recently both got into an unsolvable boot loop situation at the same time (nuts right?) so im looking to upgrade. surviving on a laptop now.

I was thinking of preparing 1 first - maybe an x570 mobo + 3900x with 32gb ram. I'm thinking of using this for gaming + some data science stuff (hence the cores). might boot into windows and linux. holding off upgrading gfx until ampere is out.

mobo wise, i looked ard, wondering if i should get the msi x570 tomahawk (read about it but dont see it on price list), or aorus master. given the recent "we are not supporting 4xx chipsets for future processors" scare, i thought better get a 5xx chipset.

cooling - really dont have time to maintain water cooling. im clumsy so m sure im going to spill something if i did. so im hoping to find a good air cooling solution.

budget - maybe 1.5k including ram? flexible. 1 machine first. the other one later. i might pass the 3900x to my wife once 4xx series is out, although a bit of an overkill

The x570 Tomahawk not released yet.. Should be hearing about it in a week or 2. Waiting for it myself.

As for RAM go for a 3600 kit since your looking at the 3900X CPU. With regards to cooling you can go for an AIO which is a sealed water cooling radiator with fans that will be attached to it as I have installed (zero maintenance) OR you could check with others on the recommended air cooling for this toasty CPU.

Like I said before,.. IF you have a working PC then hold off for a few months. The upcoming news will drive cost down and even if your set on the current 3rd gen (zen 2) there are savings to be had.

IF your existing PC is not doing great then bite the bullet and go for an upgrade but really shop around.

what resolution are you gaming at?
i am thinking of waiting too but 3900x is already very powerful and at high resolutions games are gpu bound and don't think a faster processor will do much. plus with covid19 supply chains are affected and you may not get the chip at launch and thus more waiting needed

Casual gamer. Right now, 2560x1080, but might eventually change to 1440p ultrawide.
Higher clocks should still be good for gaming.
That’s true. Maybe I’d survive on my laptop until the dust settles.
Might eventually get a ultrawide 1440p high refresh monitor. Somehow these are still hard to come by at a reasonable price now.
