DS716 doesn't have HDMI out. I think all Synology NASes don't have HDMI out.

Imo, if you need hdmi output, skip Synology.

That's what I did. I would have chosen Synology if its NASes have HDMI port.

If you have got a smart Tv or android media box you probably have nothing to worry however.

hi all,

saw a lot of NAS out in the market. can anyone recommend the best bang for buck NAS. Mainly is to store files and stream Full HD/4K videos to tv.

Budget: $200-$300 w/o hdd? not too sure if that is achievable

Personally, I'll get a DIY PC and set it up as :

1. HTPC
2. NAS (setup Mirroring under Windows Disk Manager)
3. Backup PC (in the event your PC or notebook spoilt)

Should be doable for about $400. I got an old PC that was setup like this. File transfer over Gigabit network get about 100MB/s - 120MB/s. Plus since it is a HTPC, play Full HD or 4K confirm no problem.

BUT you'll need to be familiar with Windows networking, file sharing, etc to do it.

Another super advantage of this is that, if your PC is spoilt, you can take the harddisk out and plug it into ANY Windows PC and it'll be able to read (& write) straight away.

BUT this will b shoot down by all the Qnap / Synology supporter here.

So, just my suggestion.

I read up some links, if we plug the hard disk out from the Qnap / Synology NAS, we'll need to install something to read. If need to read and write, then must install something else.

O maybe I didn't try it out to understand more.

Then ain't you as good as jumping conclusions?

If you are, shouldn't you refrain from adding the clause you will get shoot down because your understanding is somewhat lacking in the first place?

Nobody is shooting nor stalking you. We are just trying to tell you where you have misunderstood but if you continue to be obstinate, not like anyone could do anything either. We are all adults here.

Ahhh...Yes. VM is another feature from the ts251. Looks like qnap is the way to go. TS just buy the 1200$$ one and hooked it to your 4k tv. Problem solved.

Except for HDMI, all others Synology can do too.

Using Qnap TS869-Pro at office though.

OS wise, Synology is much stronger, ui is easily understood.

QNAP on the other hand even with the latest QTS 4.3 OS still crash at times (seldom but it does a number of times). Lazy to troubleshoot. I would say the OS hv improved over the years but still buggy.

Thanks bro for the suggestion. I have a DIY PC now and going to decomission it for various reasons. One of which is cos i got myself a new laptop and of course electricity fees always going up north.

Since alot of views are mixed, i have decided to go for my primary objective which is for storage and hence i will go with DAS either with
-DAS with HGST
-Straight off external HDD plugged into usb 3.0

I will find other means to stream videos to my smart TV if required since that would always be my secondary objective.

p/s do not see my setup on the right as it is super outdated now. i havent updated it ever since 2012 i think and i am going to sell it away soon once i get my storage solution up

if you have a smart tv, it should be able to wireless-ly connect to your network and stream videos from your NAS without transcoding...
unless u are talking about h265 encoded videos or 4k, which will be quite taxing for most smart tvs to handle.

one way to stream content to your tv is thru an android tv box which would cost like around 70 and above.....

Which NAS from both Synology and QNAP do you all recommend? Don't intend to use to to transcode video for streaming as I will be using an android box. So the NAS will be more like just a video file server only..
