Hi all

Helping a friend decide on a build to replace his ageing iMac who he complains is even slowing down running Excel when he scrolls through worksheets. Main usage of the PC will be for home use, surfing, word processing and editing 4k videos from his GoPro.

He is thinking of going for either 1440p or 2160p display, maybe ultra wide so he doesn't need to get a dual monitor setup. I'm suggesting the X34, but dunno if that's suitable for him since he doesn't game.

Processor: i7 6700 }
Mobo: MSI H110M Pro-VHL } $584
RAM: Kingston Hyper_X 2400MHz DDR4 - $189
Storage SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 500TB - $259
Storage HDD: WD Black 2TB - 185
GPU: Palit GTX970 Jetstream - $499
PSU: Seasonic X_Series Gold Modular 650W - 195
Casing: ?

Not sure if the GTX970 is OK for editing 4k videos but this is something I thought of. Can suggest something more appropriate if what I've listed isn't? Thanks!

Hmmm OK, thanks.. I'll ask him that. He's currently using a Mac, but will ask him what software he will use for PC. Dunno if the GoPro comes with its own editing software.

His aging iMac from which year? What's its specs like? Maybe HDD failing?

At this timing, will rather your friend hold on another 3-6 months for arrival of next gen GPU offerings. For the purpose of seeing what next gen cards have to offer, as well as expecting dirt cheap lelong price of current gen cards.

No idea. What card would be suitable, 750Ti?
You'll need DP 1.2 or HDMI 2.0.

TS, you might want to go fro Haswell-E instead of skylake. For video editing and rendering, you can never have too much processing power.

Thanks guys. My Friend says he uses the GoPro software but recently he is trying Wondershare Filmora. I looked at the minimum requirements and doesn't seem like it's very high.

Perhaps even onboard video can handle and it's more CPU power than GPU that's important?

Edit: any X99 boards with DP 1.2 or HDMI 2.0?

I did tell him that there Pascal coming out but he's a bit like me. If he wants/needs something he will just buy. No patience type lol

He mentioned his iMac is around 4 years old

Haswell e chips don't come w integrated graphics and so what u r asking for is abit invalid ba. These ports will come from the graphics cards u buy instead.

think a past gen i5 (haswell) with r9 290 will do. dosen't sound like he's doing very hardcore editing also.

first thing that came to mind is definitely an i7 with as much RAM as possible. but I do know that nowadays more and more software are leveraging on GPU for faster processing. might wanna get him to check out the software he use to edit videos. if so, he might need a good GPU.

cannot build based on the requirements to run a video editing software. of course it isn't a lot. but the speed of processing a video gonna take years it you run a past gen i5 with 8gb ram

Just to hop on this thread i am looking to upgrade my rig to edit 4k video as well.

was competing between i5 and i7 haswell series instead of skylake

@OP , have you decided on the spec ?

also filmora is not a good software(china made software copy and paste from 5 other video edit software under the same company) , trakax would be better i heard and gopro studio is generally ok for a freeware

i am currentely using adobe premier pro / gopro studio to edit my stuff(1080P instead of 4k)
