Hi I am looking for a cheap wifi extender
Budget is $20-35

Any recommendations? (with links preferably)

-Needs to be durable/long lasting
-Range needs to be only 10m (from router to my room)
-Reasonable power consumption
-Will be watching videos/lectures thus needs to have good speed/bandwidth

Actually I'm abit confused

Can a router act as an extender?
Would it be any worse than a specialised repeater?

Any specific model you recommend or use?

I saw some wifi amplifier on lazada flash sale, but didn't dare to buy as I have no knowledge about china brands

Those repeaters in lazada are already configured for you, so its plug and play.

Whereas if you buy a second hand $10 dlink 868l in carousell, you need to manually configure yourself, which needs a bit of networking knowledge. After configuration, both works the same as 868l is also dual band. Somemore you can save the configuration into your pc, and when you need to reset, just upload the configuration file, there is no need to reconfigure again.

Read faq 57574, but the guide is not complete though. Need to know the trick.

https://www.dlink.com.sg/dir-868l/

In that case, I think I might just stick with repeaters...no time to spend on learning all these knowledge

currently very busy with life

Any good recommendations for repeaters that are within my budget? Can include if occasionally on flash sale/discount
If not, model names also will do

Usually brand names like asus have good repeaters?

1st you do aware that wifi extender will 1/2 the performance ?

2nd your router to wifi extender, must have a good signal & line of sight b4 it can re-broadcast to your other wifi devices ?

3rd extenders will have same limitation, it cannot penetrate thick walls and right angle corners.

You can get a EA-8100 for only $30 on carousell.

Wifi repeater also have this problem of 1/2 the speed? I thought this only happen if you use a spare router as extender? Then what's the point?

Can I ask should I just buy a more powerful router instead of router+repeater setup?

@all: Actually I try this trick. I do WDS for 2 routers but then for the spare router, I use ethernet wire to connect to my laptop in my room.

And omfg, the speed was so fast, as if its ethernet connected

Root router->spare router->ethernet cable->laptop
Anyone who is good in networking able to explain why?

If I don't use the ethernet wire, the speed is CMI

Make sure that your "spare router" is not in router mode

Xiaomi Wifi Repeater v2 @ $7.90

At that price you could get a few. If power point is a problem, you can even use a power bank and move it to any location u want. Is on USB. Am using it myself

for no.1, does that mean that one need both a wifi extender and wifi strength booster? is that such combined single device? sorry for the noob question.

Ops, my bad, root router is in "router" mode, spare router in WDS mode

Yeah I thought wifi repeater will do but apparently whenever u use a repeater, the speed will drop by half due to some science

so my current setup is root router+spare router->ethernet cable connected to spare router

The speed is awesome; the routers communicate via 5G but I have ethernet cable connected to laptop to spare router. This gives me 100 mbps+

Get the Xiaomi wifi extender. I think around $15? I tried this and the tplink model, this range for the Xiaomi is a lot better.

Only downside is that it only comes in a USB / thumb drive form. You will need to find a spare phone charger with a usb plug like I did

Nice mate, did your speed get a 50% drop as what others said?

Powerpoint is not an issue

Repeater will always 1/2 it regardless what u use.

Imo, jus get the cheapest will do and the xiaomi one definitely meets the bill.

If you're still worried about the dropped speed, dont. I have my parents constantly streaming to watch dramas in their room while im watching youtube in mine using the extender connection. Very smooth

I have the same problem. Not quite understanding this setup. So connect spare router TO main router, then ethernet cable all the way to room? Is that correct? Is there an Ethernet cable that's that long?

I'm using a 15M cat 6 cable, so yeah there are very long ethernet cables.
