Hi Everyone,

I've been using laptop for over 4+ years, totally lost now making a DIY desktop rig. Currently am using an Aftershock laptop with 860m but it is not fulfilling some of my gaming requirements. Please recommend a rig for me, thanks.

Budget: $1.4k~$1.5k

Games I would like to play:
  • Elite: Dangerous on Oculus Rift DK2/CV1
  • Skyrim with mods on Oculus Rift DK2/CV1
  • Alien Isolation on Oculus Rift DK2/CV1
  • USFIV
  • Star Citizen on Oculus Rift DK2/CV1

Parts brought over from old computer/laptop:
- Wireless Keyboard/Mouse
- 27" Monitor

Other requirements:
- Gfx must be able to output 1080p @ 75hz on HDMI (required for low persistence for Oculus Rift), GTX970 will be good.
- 6 or more USB ports. (wireless mouse/keyboard 1, Oculus 2, joystick/HOTAS 1-2?)

Optional:
- SFF if budget can fit, casing similar to Silverstone SG05/06 or slightly bigger will be good.

Thanks.

Sure gtx970 is enough? CV1 most likely 1440p and above.

Thanks Jian19 for the build list.

Read up about the Jonsbo U2, really nice looking chassis. Are there any alternatives to it, seems like most shops their price list don't have it or have it OOS.

So far there isn't any mini-itx that can house a 980 or run SLI? This qn is more for future upgrading purposes, can weigh the pros and cons.

@Kreja:
I'm not really sure. Oculus DK2 runs ok on my laptop with 860m but it kind of shutters here and there due to the hardware architecture of the laptop (HDMI is piped through on-board graphics instead of dedicated gfx) it maxes out at 60hz refresh rate. Hence I believe getting a desktop with any gfx more powerful than a gtx860m will solve the problem.

For CV1 if Facebook want to really go mainstream with the device they will not opt for the 1440p. Not many consumers have gaming rigs powerful enough to run it. However low persistence is a must, so most probably they will still opt for 1080p but with 75hz and higher refresh rate. Will have to wait for the next generation of mobile screens to be sure since DK uses a Samsung Note 3 screen.

Dear all
I have not built my own system from SLS for more than 10 years and I believe I am a noob at building PC by now. I have been using laptops since, but recently started gaming again..

I was wondering what would be the recommended system (no need to include KB, mouse, monitor or speakers) for playing Diablo 3, Starcraft 2 etc since my laptop is showing signs that it no longer handle my excessive gaming hours and requirements.

Separately, would playing Diablo 3 and Starcraft demand a better system or playing Dota 2?

Thanks in advance.. :)

You may want to make your own thread, or else people receive notifications for replies not related to them.

State a budget and anything that can potentially be re-used (like you said, monitor kb mouse you have, what about HDD?) Recently help my bro assemble his DIY, used existing 2x 500gb HDD for storage, save cost :D

And yes, playing SC2 and D3 will demand a better system than Dota 2 :)

Iirc, gear VR already has 1440p, many reports already claim that cresent bay has a higher resolution than gear VR.

Cant really see text clearly in dk2. Resolution needs to go higher, prolly thru some carmack magic...

Have you tried playing dk2 for more than 5hrs? You'll start seeing pixel grid in real life...

Have started purchasing parts for the new system, hope the wait for black friday is worth it :)

Made some adjustments to the build suggestions here, thanks Jian for the suggestions.

Gigabyte GA-H97N-WIFI + i5-4460 $ 388
Crucial 8gb x 2 $ 192
Western Digital 1TB Blue SATA 3 $ 68
Crucial MX100 256GB $144 (Purchased, Lazada $10 off promo code)
Superflower Golden Green 600W $99 (Lazada Mastercard Monday)
Zotac GTX980 AMP! $749 (Purchased, Lazada Mastercard Monday)
Thermaltake Core V1 Mini-ITX Case $79
Windows 7 64Bit OEM $115

Gaming Accessories
Saitek x52 HOTAS $184 (Purchased, Amazon including shipping)

Total: $1834 (computer), $2012 (with HOTAS)

@Jian19:
The corsair Air 240 is really a nice looking casing :eek: Really make me can't decide between it and the Thermaltake Core V1, Micro or mini-itx.

If decide to go for the micro-atx, what will be the recommended motherboard? Assuming I want it to have wifi feature?

@Kreja:
Yeah recent reports keep talking about 1440p, which makes me think really hard about choosing what to get. :s22:

Nope have not been playing much on oculus rift, decide to keep it first until I get my new rig and hotas.
