Recommendation for a prosumer

Hi Guys,

I'm currently using a EOS1000 that I bought 5 years ago. Trusty and great, but a tad big and heavy which resulted me in using my iPhone to shoot most of my pictures instead.

I'm thinking of getting a a pocket friendly prosumer, and would like to see if any of you guys would have a recommendation. Budget would be under $1K... We take more scenic pix, but as I do have an infant, capturing his magical moments would be important as well.

Do kindly share with me your expert advise! Thanks in advance!

can consider Olympus PEN E-PL3. dpreview review is good. qoo10 is selling and it fits ur budget too.

You can consider the following options -
1. Canon powershot g15 for portability and performance without the interchangeable lens feature
2. Canon Eos-m if you have a sizable collection of EOS lenses
3. Olympus PEN EP-3/EPL-5 for interchangeable lens selection, portability, in-body image stablisation and superior AF/image quality (especially the EPL-5)

From your needs, the EPL-5 would be the best option at the moment as it balances the trade off between portability and image quality.

echo everything except the EOS-M . AF is crap compared to olympus.

The problem is that none of the recommendations are pocket-friendly like what TS wanted ( which I assume to mean that it can be put into your pocket). The bodies are pocketable, but once you put a lens on, it is quite impossible to pocket unless you stick with pancake primes.

So TS has to decide if he really wants a pocketable camera, or merely a small, lightweight camera that fits nicely into a small pouch.

For pocketable cameras, you need a compact. Consider the Sony RX100. It won't be as fast as a DSLR, but it's image quality is among the best of any true compact with zoom (it has a large sensor that is maybe half the size of APS-C found in DSLRs).

For non-pocketable, the suggestions in this thread are good starts. The Sony NEX series is pretty good too (i like the NEX 6($1300) and 3N($720)).

If you want something pocket-able, we recently reviewed the Olympus XZ-10, but since you mentioned about capturing magic moments, perhaps it's not well suited as it faced shutter and screen lag. But the annoyance depends on your tolerance. If you're used to DSLR performance, you will be put off:-

But the RX100 is probably your best bet overall if you don't mind the cost.
