Hi all,

as per above subject, my current dell (Dell Dimension E520) that had been with me since years started to have problems. (it started up with loud noise, think is the fan problem).

Thinking of changing the computer only. Monitor still in good conditions and also the wireless k/b and mouse still in tact.

Anybody had any recommendation for a assembled PC. Main functions are to surf the internet, office processing, watch movies, etc. Not much use of a gamer.

Budget below $1000. Thanks

You can do some maintenance such as cleaning out the fans and heatsink if you like. If the fan can be replaced with any standard dimension off-the-shelf part, you can do so on your own.

Any professional software that you use? Engineering, simulation, CAD, video encoding, image manipulation, programming, HPC?

Type of games played? What is your current monitor's resolution and do you foresee buying a monitor with higher resolution in the future?

$1000 is more than enough. It can be less than 600 if you do not need a discrete graphic card and that your workload is light.

Willing to assemble on your own or prefer someone else to assemble?

Willing to troubleshoot and repair on your own? If not, buy one from Dell.

Ok sure.. i will do the maintenance first because i was thinking to buy a new PC because my current one had been with me for more than 5 years.. so thought of changing one.

I dun really use professional software but maybe doing some basic photoshop.

Dun really play games... or if do, will be those internet games.

I am using the one that comes with my Dell which is 19" and forgot the resolution. (should be 1024 x 728). Unless my current monitor failed me, dun think i will buy a new monitor.

If can get someone to assemble for me, that will be even better, ease the trouble. :)

Sounds like you should just stick to a Dell since they provide support.

if you want try diy you can go:

intel g2010 + asrock b75 pro3-m = $171
2 x kingston ddr3 1333mhz 2gb ram = $44
Hitachi 1TB = ~$80
fsp 300w = ~$49 (can try ask them match pc themes at $39)
LG/Samsung 24x DVDRW OEM = ~$22
any $60 case (theres the sharkoon also if you want a nice looking one i would say the nzxt Source 210 at $69 is not bad either)
windows 7 home 64bit oem = $110

Total ~$426
(all prices taken from tradepac)

Since you watch movie and for work, do yourself a favour and get a 1080p monitor. You can use the 19" as a secondary monitor as well.

can try the aoc i2367FH at $259 (23" led ips monitor)

For safety, go PCThemes and look for Yilong. Meanwhile, be prepared for crowds during the weekends.

CPU & Mobo: G2020 & Asrock B75M-DGS @ $143
Ram: Kingston 1600mhz value ram 4GB @ $35
ODD: Samsung DVD RW @ $22
HDD: Hitachi Deskstar 1TB @ ~$80
Case: Sharkoon MS140 @ $52
PSU: FSP Hexa 500W @ $58
3 years warranty as compared to FSP 300W (IIRC, should be 12/18 months only).
OS: Windows 7 Home 64bit OEM @ $110

Total: $500
Buy and build at Tradepac.

As suggested by Swiftblade, you should consider getting a new full HD IPS monitor to enjoy your movies. I will recommend Dell U2312HM IPS monitor at $250.

You can also consider getting an SSD.
